Background
Andrew Sachs is the founder and CEO of Mauloa, the private equity firm known until 2022 as Sachs Capital. Over a roughly 30-year career in private equity he has, by the firm's account, advised and helped grow more than 40 businesses. He began his investment career in New York as an analyst at Morgan Stanley Capital Partners, where he analyzed and structured deals for that group's $1.9 billion private equity fund.
He then left Morgan Stanley to co-found KMS Investments, Inc., a private equity boutique, alongside Broadway producer Kevin McCollum. Following KMS, he became President of Capital Investors II, LLC, an early-stage venture capital fund whose limited partners included many of greater Washington, DC's leading entrepreneurs and financiers. In 2002 he co-founded Bethany Partners with Joshua Freeman (of the Carl M. Freeman Companies), a fund built on the thesis of backing local, growing companies with quality management. After Freeman's death in a helicopter accident in December 2006, Sachs founded Sachs Capital in 2007 to carry that philosophy forward, raising Fund I (2007) and, with Stuart Bassin, Fund II (2015). In 2022 the firm rebranded as Mauloa.
Sachs earned a B.S. in Foreign Service, magna cum laude, from Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service; an MBA from Georgetown's McDonough School of Business; and a General Course degree in economics from the London School of Economics. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Epsilon, and Beta Gamma Sigma, and belongs to the Washington, DC/Baltimore chapter of the Young Presidents' Organization (YPO).
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Practices what he calls "venture cash-flow investing" — applying a venture mindset to smaller, already-profitable private companies rather than chasing pre-revenue startups.
- Targets returns of "10%+ annual cash distributions plus greater than 2x return on original investment through equity appreciation."
- Writes ~$10–30M checks for 30–40% ownership in lower-middle-market, family-owned businesses.
- Positions capital as founder-friendly: *"We are long-term investors who provide owner liquidity and working capital to family-owned businesses to accelerate growth. We invest…without using debt, ruining your culture, or ever forcing you to sell."*
- Underwrites people first: *"an investment's success is mostly driven by the character of management"* — he backs teams he can *"like, trust and admire."*
- Deliberately fishes below institutional radar — companies "too small or [that] do not meet the investment criteria for, or are otherwise overlooked by, larger, institutional venture capital and private equity funds."
- Across two funds ($26M Fund I + $65M Fund II) the firm has deployed $200M+ across 20+ companies since 2007.
