Background
Andy Harvey was born and raised in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. A separate biography from the American Football Coaches Foundation says he was born in Dallas, raised in Richardson, graduated high school in 1967, attended Oklahoma State University on a football scholarship, played for four years, and graduated in 1972 with a communications degree from the School of Liberal Arts. Patterson Thoma’s team page describes him as an Oklahoma State graduate from the School of Journalism.
Before investing, Harvey spent 25 years in sales and paper distribution. Patterson Thoma states that he managed and directed United Papers, Inc., which sold to and serviced major printers and newspapers in the Southwest. The AFCF biography adds that he worked at Southwest Forest Industries and Consolidated Marketing before starting All-Pro Paper in 1986, which became United Paper Inc. through three acquisitions over the following decade.
Harvey moved into investing in 2002, including real estate development in Celina, Texas through Harvey Howard, Inc. In 2006, he joined Transition Capital Partners under Dan Patterson, where he was responsible for sourcing acquisitions and raising capital and debt. Since January 2010, he has served at Patterson Thoma Family Office as Director of Business Development.
At Patterson Thoma, Harvey works inside a privately held family investment company founded in 1982. The firm invests with long-term horizons across private equity, venture capital, real estate, specialty finance, and opportunistic situations, and says it prefers direct investments and partnerships rather than fund investing.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Patterson Thoma describes its approach as investing in opportunities with “clear return drivers,” “disciplined management teams,” and “strong fundamentals.”
- The firm says: “We believe good people drive good investments.” It identifies itself as a generalist investor across private equity, venture capital, real estate, and opportunistic/specialty finance.
- For startups and early-stage companies, Patterson Thoma says it will invest, but “only partner with companies that have achieved revenue success, through proven market demand.”
- Typical investment size is $100k to $20M, with flexibility across equity and debt structures.
- The firm prefers direct deals, states that it does not invest in funds, and says it can be sole funder, lead investor, co-investor, GP, or LP depending on the opportunity.
- Patterson Thoma likes “story” deals where its skillset and network can help drive value.
- The firm avoids cannabis, crypto, consumer products, food and beverage, capital-intensive companies, highly cyclical companies, commodity-based companies, and direct exploration/production oil and gas projects.
- It prefers frequent access to Texas and South-Central U.S. partners, but will consider out-of-state U.S. investments; it does not invest internationally.
