Background

Angus Grant is a pharmaceutical-industry executive and life-sciences investor with more than 20 years of international experience in drug regulation, development, and business development. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Richmond and a PhD in Anatomy & Immunology from the Medical College of Virginia, completing post-doctoral training at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda. Early in his career he worked at the US FDA (Center for Biologics) and the National Institutes of Health, followed by roles at SmithKline Beecham, Rhône-Poulenc Rorer/Gencell, Merck KGaA/EMD, and Novartis.

Grant spent nearly 12 years at Celgene, joining in 2006 as Vice President of North American Regulatory Affairs at the Summit, NJ headquarters. In 2008 he relocated to London to lead European Regulatory Affairs for three years, then returned to Summit in 2011 in business development, ultimately serving as Corporate Vice President of Business Development. In that role he completed numerous deals spanning discovery-stage and late-stage clinical assets and managed a portfolio of more than 60 partnerships, collaborations, and investments with pharma and biotech companies.

In July 2018 Grant left Celgene to become CEO of the Dementia Discovery Fund (DDF), the SV Health Investors–managed venture fund dedicated to disease-modifying dementia therapeutics, then the largest fund of its kind at £250M (~$350M). He subsequently served as Chief Business Executive at BeiGene (c. 2020–2023), leading strategy, partnering, business development, investments, collaborations, and alliance management, before being recruited in July 2023 by CEO Richard Francis to become Executive Vice President of Business Development at Teva Pharmaceuticals (2023–2025), where he led licensing and alliance management. He is listed among SV Health Investors' team as CEO of the Dementia Discovery Fund and is based in the firm's Boston office. He has also served on the board of MaRS Innovation / TIAP (Toronto Innovation Acceleration Partners).

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests exclusively in novel disease-modifying therapeutics for dementia — Alzheimer's disease and related neurodegenerative conditions (Parkinson's, FTD, ALS) — through the Dementia Discovery Fund.
  • Backs companies "across the full spectrum of company and asset stage opportunities," from target identification onwards, and will create new companies where the science warrants it.
  • Dual mandate: generate venture-scale financial returns while delivering measurable patient impact on a disease area of enormous unmet need.
  • Emphasis on "interrogating novel hypotheses" and expanding the range of validated biological targets beyond the historically narrow amyloid/tau focus.
  • Draws on deep pharma business-development experience — Grant is valued, per SV Managing Partner Kate Bingham, for his "huge amount of experience and strong track record in asset identification, business development, and deal making."
  • DDF is backed by an unusual syndicate of strategic partners — including Biogen, Eli Lilly, GSK, Johnson & Johnson, Otsuka/Astex, Pfizer, and Takeda, plus AARP, Bill Gates, and British Patient Capital — giving portfolio companies access to pharma expertise and follow-on capital.

Notable Investments

  • AstronauTx — UK biotech targeting astrocyte biology in Alzheimer's; secured a £6.5M financing with DDF investment.
  • AviadoBio — gene therapy company advancing programs (e.g., AVB-406) for neurodegenerative disease.
  • Cerevance — clinical-stage company developing CNS therapeutics with a focus on Parkinson's disease.
  • Violet Therapeutics — company focused on synaptic preservation in neurodegeneration.
