Background
Anne Lee Skates is the founder and general partner of Parable, a San Francisco venture firm she launched after leaving Andreessen Horowitz. She studied at Princeton (mathematics, economics, and finance) and began her career in finance and consulting — an analyst stint at Morgan Stanley followed by roughly two years as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company in San Francisco. She then moved operating-side, taking early product and user-experience roles at startups including FundersClub (head of user experience, ~2015–2016) and Solv Health (~2017–2018).
She entered venture capital as a seed-stage investor at Floodgate (~2018–2019), sourcing and leading consumer deals, before joining Andreessen Horowitz's consumer team as a partner. At a16z she became known as a prolific consumer investor, backing companies such as Whatnot, Kindred, and Cider, and writing about themes like the "new learning economy" on the firm's site. Her stated interests there spanned Gen-Z consumer trends, retail/commerce infrastructure, education and self-improvement, the creator economy, and the future of cities.
In 2024–2025 she struck out on her own, raising a first fund and publicly introducing Parable (the firm filed/began raising in 2024; she announced "Introducing Parable VC" publicly in 2025). As a solo GP she invests in consumer and prosumer AI, sharpening a thesis around AI-native "trusted recommenders," vertical super-apps, and personalized, data-driven consumer products. She is also a public-facing, content-heavy investor, writing essays such as Parable's "Trusted Recommenders" piece.
Beyond investing, she is an accomplished classical violinist — widely cited as having performed a solo at the Grammy Awards as a teenager — and she has noted supporting her husband in building Amplitude (NASDAQ: AMPL) from inception through IPO.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Stage & checks: Leads and participates in pre-seed, seed, and Series A rounds, writing checks up to roughly $10M as a solo GP (much larger ranges historically at a16z).
- Consumer & prosumer AI: Parable's explicit current focus. She backs AI-native consumer products and "vertical trusted recommenders" — apps that gather deep personal data to build durable, ongoing relationships that guide user decisions (e.g., dating, styling, learning).
- The "learning economy": A recurring personal thesis — education, coaching, and self-improvement products that help people grow personally and professionally.
- Commerce & creator economy: Future of shopping/commerce enablers, livestream and social commerce, creator-economy tooling, and software for solopreneurs and SMBs.
- What makes her say yes: Founders building "parables-in-the-making" — distinctive, category-creating companies. In her own framing: *"Since the beginning of time, humanity has progressed based on stories… They inspire, motivate, and make us imagine, create and invent."* She emphasizes spotting founder potential and market opportunity early, ahead of consensus.
