Background

Anne-Marie Birkill co-founded OneVentures in 2010 and is a Managing Partner, Executive Director of the manager, and a member of the firm's Investment Committees for Funds I, II and III. OneVentures is one of Australia's most prominent venture capital firms, managing several hundred million dollars across growth-equity and growth-credit funds and investing in technology and healthcare companies with genuinely disruptive products. Within the firm she also serves as a Responsible Manager and Chair of the Risk Management Committee.

Before founding OneVentures, Birkill was CEO of i.lab Incubator Pty Ltd and spent roughly five years in the senior management team at UniQuest (the University of Queensland's commercialisation company), including as General Manager Operations. Her earlier career was in agri-business, spending some 15 years in leadership roles developing and commercialising new cultivars of ornamental, aquatic, food and forestry plants. Across three decades she has worked with hundreds of early-stage technology companies and entrepreneurs as a director, senior executive, mentor and business coach, combining ~25 years in product development/commercialisation with ~15 years in funds management.

Birkill holds a BSc (Hons) and an MBA, and carries PS146 accreditation. She is a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (MAICD), a Registered Technology Transfer Professional (RTTP), and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (FTSE). She has served as a director of the Australian Investment Council (AIC) and as an Industry Fellow with the University of Queensland Business School, and chairs the Project Investment Committee for the UQ-led Trailblazer Food and Beverage Accelerator. A long-standing champion for diversity, she co-founded Women in Biotechnology (later merged into Women in Technology) and has served on the board of Springboard Enterprises.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Backs companies with "truly disruptive and innovative products tackling multi-billion dollar, global problems" — OneVentures' stated mandate.
  • Concentrates on healthcare/life sciences and technology; Birkill's own board work is weighted toward medtech and clinical-health companies.
  • Invests at later/growth stages (Series A through growth equity), with the firm also offering venture/growth debt so it can support companies across multiple stages.
  • Check sizes scale with the fund: ~A$5–10M for earlier growth rounds, up to ~A$20M for later-stage equity, and A$0.5–10M growth-credit facilities.
  • Looks for post-revenue businesses with real traction (e.g. Fund II targeted companies with roughly A$3–5M revenue) rather than pre-seed/idea-stage bets.
  • Adds value through active board participation and commercialisation expertise — Birkill personally takes director/chair roles in portfolio companies.

Notable Investments

  • Employment Hero — HR/payroll software scale-up; landmark OneVentures win, reported ~$116.2M realised for Growth Fund II via a secondary/continuation-fund transaction (company valued around $2B).
  • Phocas — business-intelligence/analytics software; OneVentures exit (~7x ROI), reportedly acquired by Accel-KKR (exit noted October 2025).
  • CharmHealth — clinical health software; Birkill chaired the board and led its 2017 acquisition by the Citadel Group (ASX: CGL).
  • Madorra — medical-device company (women's health); Birkill serves as a director.
  • Smart Sparrow — adaptive learning platform; acquired by Pearson.
  • Hatchtech — biotech; drug licensed to Dr. Reddy's Laboratories (NYSE: RDY).
  • My Mobile Data — acquired by an ASX-listed acquirer (ASX: AYS).
