Background

Anouk Darling is an Australian brand builder, strategic marketer and business leader, widely credited with shaping some of the country's best-known brands — including the launch of Jetstar and Scentre Group, and rebrandings of Westpac and Westfield. She holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Melbourne and an MBA from the University of New England (Australia). Her early career began at LVMH in Sydney (as a brand manager, joining around age 24), followed by a role as marketing director at Oroton and an interim consulting stint at Condé Nast, after which she built an independent retail-and-brand strategy consultancy whose clients included Westfield.

In 2003 she joined Moon Agency as head of strategy and planning, where she played a central role in creating the Jetstar brand. She was promoted to CEO after STW's 2006 acquisition of the agency (the business later folded into the Ikon Group in 2015, with STW itself acquired by WPP in 2016). Alongside her operating roles, Darling has built extensive board experience, including roughly a decade on a Macquarie-related board, plus directorships at Great Southern Railway, Discovery Holiday Parks (from 2014), and the ASX-listed Enero Group (as chair, from 2017), as well as early-stage involvement with the Hong Kong e-commerce startup iDecorate and the DNA-LAB investing fund.

From around 2016, Darling served as an Operating Partner at Allegro Funds — a leading Australian private-equity firm focused on transformation and turnaround investments — where she brought expertise in brand, creativity and predictive analytics to portfolio companies. She left Allegro in July 2020. In February 2020 she began what was initially a six-month project managing the ~A$2.2bn Urbanest acquisition and its rebranding to Scape; she was appointed CEO of Scape Australia in July 2020 and continues to lead the purpose-built student accommodation group. In 2024 she was named CEO of the Year (Property Development & Real Estate) at The CEO Magazine's Executive of the Year Awards.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Her investing profile is that of a private-equity operating partner and experienced board director, not a traditional angel/seed writer — the "Angel Investors / Seed Round" framing in the source stub is not supported by primary evidence.
  • At Allegro Funds, she was engaged for her strengths in brand, creativity and predictive analytics, applied across portfolio companies undergoing transformation and turnaround.
  • Personal early-stage involvement has spanned consumer/e-commerce (iDecorate) and a venture fund (DNA-LAB), reflecting a bias toward brand-led, consumer- and retail-facing businesses.
  • On her own operating philosophy: *"I'm one of those people that needs to see things through"* — signalling a hands-on, see-it-through operator's mindset rather than a passive check-writer.

Notable Investments

  • Scape Australia — Purpose-built student accommodation group; she led the ~A$2.2bn Urbanest acquisition/integration and rebrand, and is now CEO.
  • Allegro Funds portfolio — As operating partner (through July 2020), she advised across Allegro's turnaround/transformation portfolio companies.
  • iDecorate — Hong Kong-based e-commerce startup where she held a board/early-stage role.
  • DNA-LAB — Investing fund with which she was associated.
  • Discovery Holiday Parks — Board director (from 2014); the accommodation-parks group is owned by Australian Retirement Trust.
  • Enero Group (ASX: EGG) — Marketing/communications services group where she chaired/served as a non-executive director (from 2017).
