Background

Anurag Chandra is a Silicon Valley investor, operator, and allocator. Public biographies state that he has spent more than two decades in Silicon Valley, helped lead multiple venture capital funds with more than $2B in aggregate AUM, and held senior executive roles at three enterprise technology startups, two of which were sold to public companies.

Before Fort Ross Ventures, Chandra invested in technology companies through Lighthouse Capital Partners, The Galleon Crossover Fund, and NXT Capital / NXT Ventures, with a focus on enterprise computing, software, and digital media. His operating roles included Vice President of Finance at netDialog, which was sold to Kana Communications, and Vice President of Corporate and Business Development at Intraspect Software, which was sold to Vignette Corporation.

Chandra joined Fort Ross Ventures after meeting founder Victor Orlovski in 2016, while Orlovski was relocating to Silicon Valley to build the firm’s second fund. Chandra has described advising on fundraising and strategy before formally joining around the fund’s first close in August 2017. Public profiles list him as Senior Partner / Venture Partner at Fort Ross through January 2022.

More recent public appearances identify Chandra as Chief Investment Officer of a single-family office with an attached venture studio. He also serves as a public-member Trustee of the San Jose Federated City Employees' Retirement System; the City of San Jose roster says he was appointed in December 2016 and his current term expires November 30, 2026. SignalHire lists his education as a BA from Stanford University and a JD from Loyola Law School, Los Angeles.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • At Fort Ross, Chandra described the firm’s geographic preference as the U.S. and Israel because those were the markets where the firm had people on the ground and knew the terrain best.
  • Sector focus historically included enterprise technologies, fintech, cloud, cybersecurity, AI/ML applications, consumer marketplaces, robotics, automation, and software infrastructure.
  • Stage focus was mid-stage: companies after Series A, typically around Series B, C, or D, with evidence they had learned how to sell beyond a small early customer base.
  • Fort Ross looked for roughly $10M in trailing revenue, or close to that threshold, and wanted a diverse customer base rather than sales concentrated among friends or a few early buyers.
  • Chandra said Fort Ross’s usual check size was $5M-$10M; another Fort Ross partner described a broader Series A-D focus with $1M-$10M checks.
  • He emphasizes complementary founding teams, especially sales and marketing leadership at the mid-stage: teams of only technical founders without commercial capability were a poor fit.
  • His red flags include too little revenue traction, sectors outside the firm’s expertise such as life sciences or cleantech, aggressive projections that management cannot explain, inefficient prior capital use, non-scalable products, and mismatched go-to-market motions.
  • On diligence, Chandra has said investors need to “deputize as many people as you possibly can” to triangulate around risks, a theme he revisited in a 2025 Superclusters podcast.

Notable Investments

  • Fetch Robotics - Autonomous mobile robot company; Fort Ross led its $46M Series C in July 2019. Zebra Technologies announced in July 2021 that it would acquire Fetch for $290M for the 95% it did not already own.
  • Rookout - Developer-first observability and live production-debugging# Anurag Chandra

Background

Anurag Chandra is an investor and operator who currently describes his role as Chief Investment Officer for a single-family office that is building a “stealth AI venture studio.” He is also listed as a Board Trustee for the City of San Jose Federated City Employees’ Retirement System, and was elected chair of that board in December 2025.

Chandra was a Venture Partner at Fort Ross Ventures from 2017 to 2022. Fort Ross is a venture firm investing in enterprise, fintech, AI, cloud, cybersecurity, food tech, industrial IoT, digital health, analytics, edtech, and marketplaces, with historical ties to Sberbank and a focus on bringing technology companies into large international markets.

Before Fort Ross, Chandra held venture and technology leadership roles including Managing Director at Lighthouse Capital Partners, Chief Information Officer and Chief Technology Officer at Juniper Networks, and Chief Information Officer at TiVo. He has said that working as a CIO at large technology companies shaped how he evaluates startups, especially around enterprise sales cycles, product-market fit, and whether a company can sell effectively into large organizations.

His education is reported as an MBA from The Wharton School, a Master of Science in Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and a Bachelor of Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Historically at Fort Ross, Chandra focused on mid-stage companies, generally Series A through Series D, with the firm investing globally but preferring the United States and Israel.
  • Fort Ross’s 2020 stated deployment target was $1M-$10M, with Chandra citing $5M-$10M as the preferred range.
  • He looks for businesses that can show real commercial proof: revenue, customer traction, and a reason the company can scale beyond a technical prototype.
  • He has emphasized team quality as the first screen, saying the management team is the factor investors evaluate first because any early-stage investment carries uncertainty.
  • He is skeptical of companies that rely on paid pilots instead of durable revenue. In a 2020 interview, he said a key diligence question is whether a company has “figured out a way to extract revenue from the market.”
  • Sectors he has publicly associated with include AI, fintech, cloud, cybersecurity, industrial IoT, enterprise software, digital health, analytics, marketplaces, and automation.
