Background

Ari Emanuel (born March 29, 1961, Chicago, Illinois) is one of the most powerful figures in global entertainment. He grew up in Wilmette, Illinois, attended New Trier High School, and earned a BA from Macalester College in 1983. His brothers are former Chicago mayor and ambassador Rahm Emanuel and bioethicist Ezekiel Emanuel. He broke into Hollywood through the CAA mailroom in 1987, worked as an assistant to New York agent Robert Lantz, then became a senior agent and partner at InterTalent and ICM before striking out on his own.

In March 1995 — after recovering from being struck by a flatbed truck — Emanuel co-founded the Endeavor Talent Agency. In 2009 he orchestrated Endeavor's merger with the 111-year-old William Morris Agency to form WME, creating a super-agency representing more than a thousand top actors, writers, musicians, directors and athletes. Under Emanuel, the parent company (Endeavor) expanded aggressively into sports and events, leading the ~$4 billion acquisition of the UFC in 2016 and taking Endeavor public on the NYSE in 2021 — the first Hollywood agency to do so.

In 2023 Emanuel merged UFC with WWE to create TKO Group Holdings, where he is CEO and a director (since September 2023). In March 2025, Silver Lake completed a take-private of Endeavor (~$13B equity / ~$25B enterprise value); Emanuel reportedly cashed out roughly $176 million in the deal and became Executive Chairman of the now-private WME Group. He debuted on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index in February 2025 with an estimated net worth above $1 billion.

In October 2025, Emanuel launched MARI, a ~$2 billion holding company that consolidates live-events, sports and cultural assets carved out of Endeavor — modeled loosely on François-Henri Pinault's Artemis. MARI's initial portfolio includes the Frieze art fairs, the Miami Open and Mutua Madrid Open tennis tournaments, and a majority stake in the Barrett-Jackson collector-car auction business, and it has continued acquiring IMG arts/entertainment and action-sports assets. Backers reportedly include Apollo, Andreessen Horowitz, RedBird Capital, the Qatar Investment Authority, Eric Schmidt and Luka Dončić.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Live experiences and "owned" IP. His operating and acquisition strategy centers on sports, live events and experiences — MARI was described by an Apollo partner as pursuing "opportunities in live events and experiences," consolidating durable, premium cultural and sports franchises (Frieze, tennis, Barrett-Jackson).
  • Angel checks into founder-led consumer & tech brands. Separately from his corporate roles, he writes personal angel/strategic checks; aggregators (PitchBook, CB Insights, Tracxn) list a small personal portfolio concentrated in consumer, fintech, healthcare and energy.
  • Backs category-defining founders alongside other celebrity/strategic investors — e.g., joining a marquee cap table rather than leading institutional rounds.
  • Advisory/strategic angle on frontier tech. Sits on the advisory board of EnergyX (lithium-extraction technology), reflecting interest beyond pure media.
  • Note: his "angel investor" profile reflects personal, opportunistic equity stakes; his primary capital deployment is through operating companies (TKO, WME) and MARI's platform acquisitions, not a structured seed fund.

Notable Investments

  • Function Health — Austin-based personalized blood-testing/longevity platform; participated in its Series A (announced ~June 2024) alongside Matt Damon, Kevin Hart, Pedro Pascal and VC firms (K5, G9 Ventures, others).
  • EnergyX (Energy Exploration Technologies) — direct-lithium-extraction startup; serves as an Advisor/advisory board member.
  • MARI Holdings portfolio (2025): Frieze art fairs & publishing; Miami Open and Mutua Madrid Open tennis tournaments; Barrett-Jackson collector-car auctions; plus acquired IMG arts & entertainment and action-sports businesses.
  • TheAudience — social-media/digital talent venture he co-founded in 2011 with Sean Parker and Oliver Luckett (since wound down).
  • UFC (2016) → TKO Group (2023) — landmark sports M&A executed through Endeavor; the foundation of his current sports-IP empire.
