Arnie Oronsky

Arnie Oronsky was a scientist-turned-investor who spent more than 25 years leading the life sciences practice at InterWest Partners, one of the longer-standing diversified venture firms (founded 1979, headquartered on Sand Hill Road in Menlo Park). He earned a B.A. from New York University and a Ph.D. in immunology from Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, and he built a substantial academic and industry research career before entering venture capital. He published over 125 peer-reviewed scientific articles (InterWest's memorial cites more than 150) and held academic appointments including Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Adjunct Associate Professor of Orthopedics at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Medicine at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

His industry pedigree was in pharmaceutical R&D. From 1973 to 1976 he headed the inflammation, allergy, and immunology research program at Ciba-Geigy Pharmaceutical Company, and from roughly 1980 to 1993 he served as Vice President for Discovery Research at the Lederle Laboratories division of American Cyanamid, directing the company's drug-discovery efforts. That deep operating experience in drug discovery became the foundation of his investment thesis.

Oronsky first affiliated with InterWest as a special limited partner in 1989 and joined full-time in 1994, later becoming a Managing Director. He led InterWest's Biotech/Pharma practice and focused on backing "novel therapeutics in revolutionary areas of biology." Over the years InterWest managed roughly $1.6 billion in capital and, in 2008, closed InterWest Partners X, a $650 million fund spanning IT and life sciences. Oronsky was frequently profiled as a bridge between hard science and company-building, and Johns Hopkins Medicine featured his oncology-focused work in a 2015 article ("Cancer's Persistent Foe").
