Background

Asanka Rodrigo has more than 25 years of experience in private equity and infrastructure investing. He has been active in the private equity and venture capital industry since 1994 and joined Actis (then the emerging-markets investment arm spun out of CDC) as an Associate in 2000, rising to Partner in 2014. Over that period he has worked across Actis' strategies and geographies, with significant stints in London, Africa, India and Singapore.

Earlier in his career he was directly involved in more than 20 private equity and venture capital investments across the United Kingdom, South and Eastern Africa, and South Asia, leading deals in the industrials, business services, financial services and real estate sectors. He later headed Actis' Private Equity business for South and South East Asia before moving into the firm's energy/infrastructure side.

Today, based in Singapore, Rodrigo leads Actis' investment activities for its Asia Climate Transition strategy as a Managing Director in Energy Infrastructure. The strategy, which reached roughly US$560 million in November 2024 with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority as anchor investor, targets decarbonisation and climate solutions across Asia.

He holds an MBA from Bayes Business School (formerly Cass), City, University of London, and is a CFA charterholder. He has also served on boards including a non-executive director role at Profectus Capital in India. In his own words: *"I've always believed in the secular growth and increasing competitiveness of growth markets. Working with Actis puts me right at the forefront of this opportunity."*

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests at growth/infrastructure equity scale in Asian companies and platforms — control buyouts and significant stakes — funded from institutional vehicles such as the Actis Asia Climate Transition fund; this is institutional capital, not angel/seed money.
  • Core current thesis is climate transition and decarbonisation in Asia. In his own words: *"We will invest in Asian companies focused on decarbonisation and climate solutions with the aim of making the consumption of energy more efficient and delivering sustainable transportation solutions."*
  • Emphasises energy efficiency as a lever for decarbonisation — *"Energy efficiency is key to decarbonisation"* — alongside climate adaptation, resilience, and sustainable transport (themes he expanded on in DealStreetAsia coverage).
  • Builds on Actis' deep energy and infrastructure track record in growth markets, favouring proven business models he can scale across South and South East Asia rather than early-stage bets.
  • Sector breadth across his career spans industrials, business services, financial services and real estate, giving him a generalist growth-markets lens applied through a climate/infrastructure focus.

Notable Investments

  • Barghest Building Performance (bbp) — Energy-Savings-as-a-Service provider for HVAC systems across Asia, delivering up to ~40% energy savings via software, sensors and AI optimisation. Actis acquired a 100% stake in July 2025 (a flagship deal of the Asia Climate Transition strategy he leads).
  • Actis Asia Climate Transition fund — the ~US$560m strategy he leads (anchored by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, closed Nov 2024); platform vehicle for his current decarbonisation investments across Asia.
  • Profectus Capital (India) — non-bank lender where Rodrigo has served as a Non-Executive Director, reflecting his earlier financial-services and South Asia PE work.
  • Earlier in his career, leadership of 20+ private equity/VC investments across the UK, Southern/Eastern Africa and South Asia in industrials, business services, financial services and real estate (individual deals not all publicly named).
