Background

Ashot Arzumanyan is a deep-tech venture investor and co-founder of SmartGateVC, a California- and Armenia-based pre-seed/seed fund investing at the intersection of AI with security, biotech, robotics, and neurotech. He was born in Yerevan, Armenia, and holds a PhD in Economics from Yerevan State University (2010). Before venture capital, he spent roughly 15 years in management consulting and investment advisory, structuring deals and advising entrepreneurs on finance, strategy, business valuation, and market research across the CIS, the United States, and the Middle East.

He co-founded SmartGateVC in January 2018 together with partners Vazgen Hakobjanyan and Hambardzum Kaghketsyan. The firm's thesis pairs U.S. market formation, customers, and capital with deeply technical teams in Armenia, adding trust and operating leverage through a global Armenian network that includes backers such as Tim Draper and One Way Ventures. Since 2018 Arzumanyan has written first checks into 40+ science-driven startups; the fund now counts roughly 42 portfolio companies, several of which have gone on to raise from NVIDIA, a16z, Bessemer, Khosla, Cisco, and Y Combinator.

Beyond investing, Arzumanyan is an adjunct lecturer at the American University of Armenia, where he teaches "BUS 377 — Venture Capital Management" to MBA students. He is affiliated with several Armenia-based technical initiatives, including the Yerevan Machine Learning Excellence Center, the Gate42 Quantum Computing Research Lab, the Y-Ledger Blockchain Developers Consortium, and the Armenia Startup Academy. He is married with three children.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests primarily at pre-seed, usually as the first investor in a company, with initial checks up to ~$100K.
  • In his words: *"We primarily invest in deep tech companies – everything around AI: AI infrastructure and tools, AI-enabled SaaS, AI-powered IoT, AI-based biotech."*
  • Current firm focus is concentrated in Physical AI & Robotics, AI Security (TRiSM frameworks / Secure Edge), and Neurotech & BCI.
  • Backs founders solving problems *"from first principles — where invention, not iteration, is the foundation."*
  • Team-first philosophy: *"Fund superhero teams — capable, unstoppable, unbreakable."* He looks for exponential growth capability, deep dedication to overcome obstacles, and structural team stability; he attributes failures to founders who lack capability, aren't sufficiently dedicated, or suffer internal team conflict.
  • Emphasizes early engagement from day one and hands-on support through capital, technical talent, and industry connections.

Notable Investments

  • SuperAnnotate — AI data/model management (image annotation origins); backed the two PhD founder-brothers early, later raised a $14.5M Series A led by Base10.
  • Deep Origin — AI-driven drug discovery / computational biology.
  • Perceptron AI — AI-powered perception software.
  • Grovf — Big-data / high-performance computing and hardware acceleration.
