Background

Aurelio Almonte is a Founding Partner, Managing Partner, and Investment Committee member of Small Business Community Capital (SBCC), an SBIC-licensed impact fund that provides customized debt and junior-capital solutions to small and lower-middle-market businesses across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. He brings roughly two decades of principal-investment experience in the debt markets, with lending expertise spanning multiple debt classes and a recent focus on financing small and medium-sized enterprises.

Before SBCC, Almonte was Chief Credit Officer and Co-Chief Investment Officer at Savile Finance Group (a firm he is described as having co-founded), where he reviewed and approved all loan submissions, negotiated transaction terms, and built out the firm's credit policies, financial models, and risk-rating tools. Earlier he served as Senior Credit Officer at Maple's Commercial Finance Group, leading credit processes from pricing through repayment. His career also includes time at Maple Securities — where his long professional partnership with SBCC co-founder J. Pablo Mariño began in 2004 — and at PB Capital, a subsidiary of Deutsche Postbank AG, in portfolio-management and logistics-finance roles.

Almonte holds a Bachelor of Science in Finance from St. John's University. At SBCC he works alongside co-founders Monika Mantilla (President/CEO of affiliated Altura Capital), Jay Garcia, and J. Pablo Mariño, plus Partner Crandall Deery. SBCC received its SBIC license in July 2015 and launched a capital initiative in partnership with the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC).

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Provides $1–$12 million per company in flexible, customized debt and junior/subordinated capital (plus selective equity), rather than pure venture equity — targeting cash-flowing businesses, not pre-revenue startups.
  • Requires companies to have established market positions, strong cash flows, experienced management teams, and roughly $1M+ EBITDA.
  • Impact-driven mandate: emphasizes women- and minority-owned business enterprises (MWBE) and businesses in LMI zones; the firm states it commits at least 50% of capital to Low-to-Moderate Income communities and has historically had 80%+ of investments in minority-owned businesses or LMI-eligible areas.
  • Frames its mission as "social transformation through entrepreneurial success" — seeking financial returns alongside measurable community impact (SBCC was named a "Best for the World" fund by B the Change Media in 2016).
  • Supports a range of transaction types: growth/expansion capital, family ownership transitions, recapitalizations, acquisitions and roll-ups, and debt restructuring.

Notable Investments

  • Salient Holdings — investment by Small Business Community Capital II (reported November 1, 2025).
  • Wrangle LLC — Senior Secured Term Loan supporting an acquisition (October 2017).
  • Earth Lab Holdings — subordinated debt and equity backing the merger of Wise Woman Herbals and Superior Labs (2017).
  • Pastelería Cidrines — growth partnership with the Puerto Rico–based bakery company (October 2015).
