Background

Barry D. Reynolds is a Senior Advisor at Housatonic Partners and founded the firm’s San Francisco office in 1998. Housatonic itself was founded in 1994 and has grown into a bi-coastal private equity firm with more than $1.5 billion under management and investments in more than 110 companies.

Before Housatonic, Reynolds worked with Bain Capital, Texas Pacific Group, and Trident Capital, focusing on information and business services companies. Earlier, he was a Manager at Bain & Company, where he co-founded the firm’s Principal Investor Services practice, advising medium and large buyout funds and strategic buyers.

Reynolds began his career as an engineer at General Electric. He holds a B.S. from the University of California, Berkeley and an M.B.A. from Stanford Graduate School of Business, where Housatonic says he was a Ford Scholar.

His current Housatonic team page lists him as a Director of LQ Digital, Registria, and Sprout Health. Earlier Housatonic releases also identify him as a board member for ServiceSource, Aymira, and Mobile Vascular Physicians at the time of those investments.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Housatonic’s stated approach is to provide “equity commitments of $10 to 50 million for growth, minority recapitalization, and buyout transactions.”
  • The firm looks for internal revenue growth, recurring revenues, high EBITDA margins, moderate capital intensity, and talented management teams.
  • Housatonic emphasizes long-term partnership rather than quick flips; the firm reports an average hold period of more than 7 years.
  • Reynolds’s own career focus has been information and business services, and his board roles also show recurring exposure to technology-enabled services, healthcare services, marketing services, and SaaS-enabled business models.
  • Search funds are a meaningful channel for Housatonic: the firm says its Managing Directors helped pioneer the search-fund community and have backed more than 100 search funds over two decades.
  • Housatonic is typically an active board participant, but says it does not involve itself in day-to-day operations.
