Background

Barry Robinson is a Partner at Phoenix Equity Partners, a London-headquartered mid-market private equity firm founded in 2001 that has invested more than £1bn across 40-plus UK companies. He joined Phoenix in 2005 and sits on the firm's Investment Committee. Before Phoenix, he worked in corporate finance at Deloitte, spending time in the firm's Newcastle and Manchester offices.

Within Phoenix, Robinson focuses on healthcare opportunities and leads the firm's regional investment origination — the effort to source deals outside London. When Phoenix opened its Manchester office on King Street in May 2011 (its third UK location, after London and a Harrogate satellite), Robinson relocated to the North West as one of the firm's Principals to help build its northern deal pipeline. He was quoted at the time calling Manchester "quite simply the most active for private equity investments outside London."

He has since been promoted to Partner and is the firm's representative on the boards of several portfolio companies, including drug-discovery services provider Sygnature Discovery. His deal experience spans healthcare and consumer businesses such as FutureMeds, Sygnature Discovery, Forest Holidays, Just Childcare and SMH Group.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests through Phoenix's institutional funds in established, medium-sized UK companies — typically £20m–£200m enterprise value — rather than early-stage or seed rounds.
  • Personal focus on healthcare — clinical trials, drug discovery and healthcare services — where the firm builds sector conviction before investing.
  • Strong emphasis on founder-led and management-led businesses: on the FutureMeds deal he said the investment "reflects Phoenix's continued commitment to partnering with founder-led businesses in sectors where we have deep research and conviction."
  • Values genuine partnership with management; one portfolio CEO described him as someone who "shared our passion and ambition to build a significant childcare business."
  • Leads regional origination, actively sourcing deals in the North of England and other UK regions outside London.

Notable Investments

  • FutureMeds — European clinical-trial site-management organisation (SMO) operating 27 clinical sites across 7 countries; Phoenix backed the founder team (CEO Dr Radoslaw Janiak) in a healthcare growth investment.
  • Sygnature Discovery — UK drug-discovery services company; Robinson serves as Phoenix's board representative.
  • Forest Holidays — operator of secluded eco-cabins and treehouses across nine sites in Britain's National Forests; Phoenix acquired a controlling stake alongside the Forestry Commission and LDC.
  • Just Childcare — nursery / childcare group; referenced in a portfolio CEO's testimonial about building "a significant childcare business."
  • SMH Group — listed among Robinson's portfolio/board experience.
  • Capital Economics — economics research firm backed by Phoenix Equity Partners.
