Background

Ben Frewin is a Managing Partner at Archer Capital, one of Australia's oldest and most experienced private equity firms (established 1997, 100% Australian-owned). He joined the firm in 2004 and is responsible for sourcing and executing new investment opportunities and for managing portfolio companies. He sits alongside fellow Managing Partner Peter Gold in the firm's senior leadership.

Before Archer, Frewin built a career spanning corporate finance, media and accounting. He spent roughly three years in corporate development at the Ten Network (Channel Ten), two years as an equity research analyst covering the Australian media sector at Macquarie Bank, and about five years with Price Waterhouse across its Adelaide, Jakarta and Sydney offices. He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (Australia).

Academically, Frewin holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Adelaide and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in the United States.

At Archer, Frewin has been closely associated with the firm's healthcare investing. He led Archer's investment in Healthe Care (a private hospital operator) and has served on the board of iNova Pharmaceuticals since the company was formed in December 2006. Archer's healthcare portfolio during his tenure also included aged-care platform Allity and aviation-services company Aerocare.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests through Archer Capital's private equity funds in established, mid-market Australian and New Zealand businesses — this is control/buyout and growth capital, not angel or seed-stage investing.
  • Archer's stated selection criteria: "platforms for growth," "alignment with founders and managers," and "favourable industry dynamics."
  • Core sectors: Consumer, Healthcare, and Services — Frewin's own track record skews toward healthcare (Healthe Care, iNova Pharmaceuticals, Allity).
  • Focuses on deal sourcing, execution and active portfolio management, typically taking board roles in portfolio companies and driving operational growth to a trade or secondary sale.
  • Track record oriented toward market-leading, cash-generative businesses that can be scaled through buy-and-build or operational improvement (e.g., Allity grown into one of Australia's largest aged-care providers).

Notable Investments

  • Healthe Care — Private hospital group; Frewin led Archer's investment. (Archer built and later exited the business; Healthe Care was sold to China's Luye Medical Group in 2015.)
  • iNova Pharmaceuticals — Specialty/consumer pharmaceuticals company; Frewin has been a board member since its formation in December 2006.
  • Allity — Aged-care platform assembled from ~30 facilities acquired from Lendlease (2013), grown into one of Australia's largest aged-care providers (Archer healthcare portfolio).
  • Aerocare — Australia's leading independent aviation ground-services provider (airport flight support across Australia and New Zealand).
  • MYOB — Accounting software; acquired by Archer (~A$450m) and sold to Bain Capital (~A$1.1bn), a landmark Archer exit during Frewin's tenure.
  • Craveable Brands / Quick Service Restaurant Holdings — Owner of Red Rooster, Chicken Treat and Oporto fast-food chains.
  • Supercars Championship — Archer was a major investor in the Australian motorsport series.
  • (Firm-level portfolio during his tenure also included Rebel Sport, Repco, and AusFuel.)
