Background

Ben Guill is a co-founder and Managing Partner of White Deer Energy, a Houston-based private equity firm he launched in 2008 alongside Thomas Edelman. White Deer invests in the energy sector across oil & gas E&P, oilfield services and equipment, midstream, and increasingly energy-transition and industrial businesses, and has raised roughly $3.0 billion of capital through multiple privately managed partnerships. The firm frames its mission around "three pillars of energy: reliability, affordability, and sustainability," and describes its approach as thematic investing that combines research and operating experience with an integrated ESG framework.

Before founding White Deer, Guill was President of First Reserve Corporation, a leading energy-focused private equity firm, which he joined in September 1998 and led until April 2007. Based in First Reserve's Houston office, he focused on deal origination, investment analysis, negotiation of acquisitions, and management of portfolio companies. Earlier in his career he spent 19 years at Simmons & Company International, a specialized investment bank serving the oil-service industry, where he joined in 1980 and rose to Managing Director and Co-Head of Investment Banking, working primarily on mergers and acquisitions, financings, and corporate restructurings. In total he brings more than 40 years of experience in the energy industry as both an investment banker and a private equity investor.

Guill earned his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and an MBA from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He has served for years on the board of NOV Inc. (formerly National Oilwell Varco) and on the boards of White Deer portfolio companies including Flowco Holdings and On Point Oilfield Holdings. His civic and nonprofit commitments include Teach For America, IDEA Public Schools, and The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Beyond energy, the Guill family is active in Houston business and sports: Guill serves as Chairman of the Board of Blue Crow Sports Group, and the family holds ownership stakes in the Houston Dynamo (MLS) and the Houston Astros (MLB) and operates ventures such as the Fajita Pete's restaurant brand.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests in the energy value chain — oil & gas exploration and production, oilfield services and equipment manufacturing, and midstream — with growing emphasis on energy transition, decarbonization, and industrial services.
  • Backs "talented entrepreneurs and high-growth companies that provide products and services to traditional and new energy sectors, as well as related industries" (firm's own stated focus).
  • Emphasizes "thematic investing combining research and experience," using an ESG framework the firm calls "core to our investment process and portfolio management efforts."
  • Operates as a middle-market private equity investor (growth equity, recapitalizations, buyouts) rather than a seed/angel investor, drawing on Guill's decades of energy banking and PE experience for hands-on portfolio management.
  • Recurring themes in recent deals: U.S. industrial onshoring, custom-engineered equipment, artificial lift / production optimization, and emissions-monitoring technology.

Notable Investments

  • Flowco (Flowco Holdings, NYSE: FLOC) — Production-optimization and artificial-lift provider formed in 2024 via the merger of Flowco Production Solutions, Estis Compression, and Flogistix (a JV with Global Energy Capital); IPO'd in January 2025. Guill serves on its board.
  • Cust-O-Fab — Tulsa-based maker of custom-engineered thermal-management products for refining, petrochemical, gas, power, and renewables; investment announced December 2025 with LSV Advisors.
  • WeldFit — Pipeline products and services company in White Deer's portfolio.
  • LongPath Technologies — Methane/emissions-monitoring technology company (energy transition).
  • Ranger Energy Services (NYSE: RNGR) — Oilfield services company; a White Deer portfolio IPO.
  • Fiberspar — Spoolable pipe manufacturer; a White Deer portfolio exit via acquisition.
  • On Point Oilfield Holdings — Oilfield services platform; Guill serves on its board.
  • PostRock Energy and Emerald Oil — Earlier E&P-related portfolio positions.
