Background

Ben Ogle is a longtime software engineer and startup founder based in San Francisco. He grew up in the Spokane, Washington area (Mt. Spokane High School) and studied at Eastern Washington University before moving into the Bay Area tech scene. Early in his career he held engineering roles at companies including AdRoll, building web and product engineering experience in JavaScript, Python, and front-end/UX work.

In 2012 he co-founded Easel.io (Y Combinator, Summer 2012), a browser-based design and prototyping collaboration tool. Easel was acquired by GitHub at the end of 2013. At GitHub, Ogle became a lead engineer and product manager on Atom, the open-source, Electron-based text editor that grew to more than one million active developers — work for which he is best known in the developer community and which is reflected in his prolific open-source GitHub presence.

In 2018 he co-founded Anvil (Anvil Foundry, Inc.), a platform for automating document-based, paperwork-heavy processes — turning forms into online workflows and offering APIs/SDKs for generating, filling, e-signing, and managing PDFs. He served as CTO from roughly 2018 to 2024, and represented the company as a technical speaker at events such as FinovateSpring (2019, 2024) and DeveloperWeek 2021, where he demoed Anvil's PDF API. Anvil raised roughly $5–10M, with a Series A led by Gradient Ventures (Google's AI fund) and backing from investors including Craft Ventures, Menlo Ventures, Citi Ventures, Financial Venture Studio, and 122 West.

Per his LinkedIn, Ogle's more recent role is in Engineering at Ironclad, the contract-lifecycle-management company. His combination of successful founder outcomes (an acquisition by GitHub, a venture-backed second startup) is the classic profile of an "operator angel" who backs early-stage companies informally rather than through a formal fund.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Profiled here as a seed-stage angel investor — an individual operator-angel rather than a partner at a named venture firm.
  • No formal, publicly published thesis, check size, or fund structure could be verified; investments (if any) appear to be made personally under his own name.
  • His domain credibility is strongest in areas he has actually built in: developer tools, open-source infrastructure, SaaS, document/PDF automation, and fintech/back-office workflow tooling — the natural adjacencies for a founder from the Atom and Anvil worlds.
  • As a two-time founder (one acquisition, one VC-backed company), he is the kind of technical operator who typically adds value at the earliest stage through product, engineering, and go-to-market guidance rather than capital alone.

Notable Investments

  • No specific angel/portfolio investments by Ben Ogle could be verified from public sources (Crunchbase, PitchBook, AngelList did not surface a documented personal deal list). Rather than invent deals, the items below reflect his *founder/operator* track record, which underpins his credibility as a seed-stage angel:
  • Easel.io — Design/prototyping collaboration startup he co-founded (YC S12); acquired by GitHub in 2013.
  • Atom — GitHub's open-source text editor; he was lead engineer / product manager as it scaled past 1M+ users.
  • Anvil (useanvil.com) — Document/PDF workflow automation company he co-founded in 2018 and led as CTO; raised a Series A led by Gradient Ventures with Craft Ventures, Menlo Ventures, Citi Ventures, and others.
