Background
Bengt Arve Rem is the CEO of Kistefos AS, the diversified Norwegian private investment company owned by industrialist and financier Christen Sveaas. Rem joined Kistefos in 2015 and has led the firm's investment activities across its portfolio of financial services, technology, offshore, shipping, and real estate holdings.
Rem's career spans auditing, capital markets, industrial finance, and investment banking. He began as a state-authorized public accountant at Arthur Andersen & Co (1985–1990), then spent roughly five years at the Oslo Stock Exchange (1990–1995), where he headed the department responsible for financial instruments. He subsequently held a series of senior positions in the Aker system (1995–2009), including Executive Vice President & CFO of Aker ASA and CFO roles at Kværner ASA. He then moved into investment banking as Deputy CEO and later CEO of Arctic Securities ASA (2009–2014) and CEO of Arctic Partners AS (2014–2015) before taking the top job at Kistefos.
Academically, Rem holds a Master of Science in Business Administration and Finance from the Norwegian Business School (BI) and is a state-authorized public accountant qualified through the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration (NHH). Reflecting Kistefos's active-ownership model, he sits on numerous boards, including as Chairman of Advanzia Bank S.A., Western Bulk Chartering AS, and Holberg Fondsforvaltning AS, plus roles connected to Viking Supply Ships and Oslo Airport City AS, and has served as a board member of Orkla ASA.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Kistefos pursues a self-described "pragmatic and opportunistic" mandate with "a lot of flexibility with regards to sector, geography, ticket size and holding period."
- The core objective is "to create value through active ownership on the back of influential ownership stakes, board representation and strong focus on operational and strategic activities." Rem and Kistefos want control or meaningful influence, not passive minority checks.
- Portfolio is deliberately balanced "between cash-flow generating investments and early-stage investments with high potential," spanning start-ups to mature companies.
- Sector concentration in financial services/fintech (Advanzia, Komplett Bank, Instabank, Holberg), technology/TMT (1881 Group, NextGenTel, Bitpro), and offshore/shipping (Viking Supply Ships, Sea1 Offshore, Western Bulk).
- Geographically anchored in the Nordics and broader Europe, with selective US exposure; a dedicated "Ventures & Scale-ups" sleeve handles emerging-growth bets.
