Background
Bernardo Bluhm is a Switzerland-based investor-operator with more than 15 years spanning venture capital, private equity, and large-scale infrastructure projects. He earned an MBA at INSEAD and an undergraduate degree from Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) in Brazil, and he co-authored the INSEAD teaching case *"Private Equity in Frontier Markets: Creating a Fund in Georgia"* (2016), reflecting an early focus on institutional investing in emerging and frontier markets.
Before his current roles, Bluhm worked in corporate venture capital at ENGIE New Ventures, the venture arm of the French energy group, where he was involved in innovation and investment (Innovation Director). In that period he also served as a judge for INSEAD's Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC), including the 2018 MBA Europe South round. Aggregator data credits him with roughly $282M of lifetime investment activity across about 19 companies.
Since 2019 he has been a Venture Partner at Loyal VC, the Toronto-headquartered evergreen fund that backs founders from the INSEAD, Founder Institute, and investor-community networks — anchoring Loyal's presence in the European/Swiss ecosystem alongside partners in Palo Alto, Milan, Frankfurt, Dublin and elsewhere. In parallel he operates as an innovation-and-investment advisor under the "Rogue VC" banner (bernardobluhm.com), counseling VC funds on follow-on decisions and governments on innovation programs, and he serves as an Innosuisse expert in Switzerland. He is also CFO of Moduspace and sits on/works with the boards of Swiss ventures including Planetary SA and Zoundream AG.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests through Loyal VC's distinctive model: "Start very small, diligence over months from the inside, and make follow-on rounds highly competitive" — small initial checks, deep insider diligence, then concentrated follow-on into winners.
- Sources deals from top founders in three networks: INSEAD (top-five business school), Founder Institute (large pre-seed accelerator), and Loyal's 200+ investor community, supported by 1,000+ advisors.
- Stage: pre-seed and seed; geography: global and sector-agnostic (Loyal holds 400+ investments across 70+ countries).
- In his personal advisory practice he focuses on B2B startups, helping founders build "rapid, less-friction" fundraising processes — optimal capital-raising strategy, milestone/metric roadmaps, and curated investor lists.
- Given his ENGIE and infrastructure background, he brings particular depth in energy, deep tech, and hardware/modular ventures (e.g., Moduspace, Planetary).
Notable Investments
- Zoundream AG — Swiss startup building AI to interpret newborn/infant cry patterns; Bluhm is involved with the company.
