Background
Bernardo Garcia is one of the three founding partners of Shift Capital, a São Paulo–based growth/private-equity firm launched in 2017. He co-founded the firm alongside Fernando Jamra and João Paulo Maia; the team describes itself as "Private Equity investors who look nothing like traditional investors," a group that has known one another for more than 15 years and embeds a dedicated two-person investment team into each portfolio company for the life of the partnership.
Before Shift, Garcia built a finance and dealmaking track record in Brazil. He worked in M&A advisory at Cypress Associates and in private equity at Pátria Investimentos (Patria Investments), one of Latin America's largest alternative-asset managers. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance from Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), earned between 2011 and 2015.
Consistent with Shift's operator-investor model, Garcia takes active roles inside portfolio companies. He has served as a board member at Bluefit Academia (a Brazilian fitness-club chain) and at TerraMagna (an agri-credit fintech), and is associated with Atlas Agro BR, a Shift portfolio company in agricultural processing/trading, where he has been listed in a CEO / Chairman of the Board capacity. This hands-on involvement reflects Shift's stated philosophy of "deep fundamentalism," portfolio concentration, and direct execution support rather than passive capital.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in Brazil's "real economy" and tech-enabled businesses, partnering "alongside exceptional entrepreneurs" since 2017.
- Runs a concentrated, PE-style playbook: "investing selectively, with a Private Equity-like pace and diligence," working closely with each company and offering "execution capabilities and value-add."
- Emphasizes "deep fundamentalism" and portfolio concentration over diversification — a small number of high-conviction bets rather than spray-and-pray.
- Embeds a dedicated two-person Shift investment team into every portfolio company for the full life of the partnership, supplemented by the "Scuderia Shift" (led by João Maia) plus sector-specific advisors and board members.
- Sector breadth spans consumer brands (beauty, eyewear, fitness, coffee/beverages), agribusiness, and FinTech; NFX Signal indexes his check sizes at roughly $4M–$40M (sweet spot ~$25M).
