Background
Bertrand Vernizeau is the CEO and Investment Partner — and a co-founder — of Game Seer Venture Partners, a privately funded venture firm focused exclusively on indie PC and console games. He began his career at Nexway, a French digital-distribution startup, where he managed major retail accounts such as Amazon Europe and Deutsche Telekom and worked with publishers including Electronic Arts, Bethesda, Warner Bros., and ArenaNet on game distribution. He is described as quadrilingual.
In 2014 he joined Game Seer's ventures as head of game operations, helping grow the operation to roughly 100 employees with strong financial performance, before the firm pivoted into investing. Game Seer Venture Partners was founded in 2019 by Vernizeau and his partner Mikel (a pioneer of digital game distribution since 2005 who built prior ventures to public listing). The team markets itself on more than 15 years of industry experience and over 60 million games sold through earlier ventures.
Game Seer is deliberately positioned as "not a bank, not a family office, not an institution" — the founders invest their own pooled capital with no outside LPs, which lets them move quickly and back projects on conviction. The current team also includes publishing producer and scout Thomas Ghyselen (ex-Ubisoft, Focus Home, Xbox), and René Brandenbusch is listed as managing director of the German GmbH. In a January 2026 essay, Vernizeau signaled he intends to keep financing game projects while becoming increasingly hands-on in publishing, development, and production of his own titles.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests only in indie PC and console games — no mobile, VR, or AR.
- Writes checks of roughly €100K–€1.5M per project (flexibility for larger productions), almost always requiring at least a prototype, demo, or vertical slice rather than just a pitch deck.
- Offers a flexible, three-tiered model: game financing (with or without publishing rights), publishing services, and equity investments in established studio relationships. Studios typically retain their IP — "The main incentive of not being a publisher is that the studio retains the IP."
- Prizes measurable traction over hype: he weighs demo downloads and concurrent/daily active players far more than wishlist counts, which he considers unreliable. Half Sword's 500,000+ demo downloads and steady daily players were the kind of real signal he looks for.
- Bets on team and character over pedigree/track record, arguing that changing a team changes everything: "When we look around, we're looking for killers," because game development is "chaos and hell." He seeks founders with "drive, chemistry and the will to bring a meaningful addition."
- Believes in immediate engagement: "If you can generate satisfaction in a five-second game sequence, that's great."
- Emphasizes creative freedom and a developer-friendly, transparency-first partnership — a publishing manager who follows development rather than an executive producer imposed on the team.
Notable Investments
- Half Sword Games (*Half Sword*, physics-based medieval fencing game for PC) — Seed, June 2024; flagship investment chosen on the strength of 500K+ demo downloads.
- Gamera Interactive (*Alaloth: Champions of the Four Kingdoms*, isometric souls-like RPG) — Seed, ~$1M, December 2020.
- Marslit Games — ~$400K, April 2021.
- JanduSoft (publisher/developer) — ~$250K, September 2020.
- Grimorio of Games — indie studio (Entertainment Software).
- Old Skull Games, Tavrox Games, AurumDust, Frima — additional portfolio relationships across the studio's roughly 7–11 recorded investments.
