Background
Bill Ashmore joined Ethos Private Equity in 1999, where he took responsibility for the firm's senior and mezzanine debt relationships. He built a track record for arranging and structuring significant debt financing for private-equity transactions, developing detailed knowledge of international and local debt pricing, investment structures, and BEE (Black Economic Empowerment) funding models — expertise widely recognized in the Southern African market.
Before Ethos, Ashmore was a Vice President of Corporate Banking at Citibank South Africa. He subsequently headed the Corporate Banking and Structured Project Finance business at FirstCorp Merchant Bank, and later served as a divisional general manager at First National Bank. This banking pedigree — corporate lending, structured and project finance — is the foundation of his role structuring the debt side of Ethos's leveraged deals.
Ethos itself is one of South Africa's oldest and most prominent alternative-investment firms, founded in 1984, with a track record of well over 150 investments concentrated in small- and mid-sized companies across South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. In April 2023, Ethos was acquired by The Rohatyn Group (TRG), a global emerging-markets asset manager; the firm's mezzanine platform now operates under the TRG umbrella (e.g., the fund formerly known as Ethos Mezzanine Partners III is now referenced as TRG Mezzanine Partners 3).
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Operates at the debt / mezzanine layer of private-equity buyouts, not equity seed rounds — arranging senior debt, mezzanine growth capital, acquisition finance, and replacement capital for mid-market companies.
- Focus on mid-market companies in East and Southern Africa, consistent with the mandate of Ethos/TRG Mezzanine Partners (mezzanine growth, acquisition, and replacement capital).
- Deep emphasis on structured and BEE-compliant funding models, reflecting the South African regulatory and empowerment context.
- Sector-agnostic but concentrated where Ethos deploys capital: industrial distribution, consumer/retail, and industrial minerals/mining.
Notable Investments
- Brandcorp — a value-added distributor of niche industrial and consumer products.
- House of Busby — distributor and retailer of clothing, luggage, handbags, accessories, eyewear, and footwear; founded 2004, based in Johannesburg (an Ethos portfolio company).
- Idwala — an industrial minerals and lime company positioned as environmentally and socially responsible.
