Background
Bill Gurley was born May 10, 1966, in Dickinson, Texas. He earned a BS in computer science from the University of Florida (1989) and an MBA from the University of Texas (1993), and he holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. He began his career as a design engineer at Compaq Computer, where he worked on products including the 486/50 and Compaq's first multi-processor server.
Gurley then spent roughly four years on Wall Street as a top-ranked equity research analyst, including time at CS First Boston covering PC hardware and software companies such as Dell, Compaq, and Microsoft. He served as a lead analyst on the Amazon IPO and earned spots on the Institutional Investor All-American Research Team in 1995 and 1996. He moved into venture capital first as a partner at Hummer Winblad Venture Partners before joining Benchmark in 1999.
At Benchmark, Gurley became one of the most prominent and respected venture investors of his generation, operating within the firm's distinctive equal-partnership model (all partners share economics equally, with no senior/junior hierarchy). In April 2020, after 21 years, he announced he was stepping back from active investing and would not participate in Benchmark's tenth fund, choosing instead to support his existing portfolio and pursue new projects. He has since relocated to Austin.
For more than 15 years, Gurley has authored the influential blog *Above the Crowd*, focused on the evolution and economics of high-technology businesses. He is widely cited for his analytical, valuation-driven approach and for essays on topics such as unit economics, marketplace take rates, and the dangers of late-stage private market exuberance.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in large-market, network-effect businesses — especially online marketplaces — where winner-take-most dynamics and strong unit economics can compound for years
- Emphasizes companies with sustainable competitive advantage and healthy underlying economics, not just growth; known for rigorous market-sizing and skepticism toward businesses that rely on subsidized, money-losing transactions
- Wrote the widely read essay "All Markets Are Not Created Equal", arguing that the value of a marketplace business depends heavily on factors like fragmentation, frequency, network effects, and the sustainable take rate
- Famously contrarian on TAM (total addressable market) — his Uber thesis countered Aswath Damodaran's narrow taxi-market sizing by arguing ride-hailing would *expand* the market well beyond existing taxi spend
- Public advocate for founder-friendly, board-engaged investing; typically takes board seats and works closely with a small number of companies at a time
Notable Investments
- Uber — led Benchmark's Series A in 2011 (~$4M pre-money); board member; one of the most lucrative VC bets in history (estimated 100x+ return)
- Zillow — early investor; IPO'd (NASDAQ: Z)
- OpenTable — board member; IPO'd (OPEN), later acquired by Priceline/Booking Holdings
- GrubHub — board member; IPO'd (GRUB)
- Stitch Fix — board member; IPO'd (SFIX)
- Nextdoor — neighborhood social network; later went public via SPAC
- HackerOne — vulnerability-coordination / bug-bounty platform
- Good Eggs — online grocery / food delivery
- Solv — on-demand healthcare booking
- Also associated over his career with deals/holdings including Twitter and Snap (Snapchat)
