Background
Bill Morrow is a serial entrepreneur who has spent more than two decades creating, building and selling businesses. A certified/chartered financial accountant and graduate of the University of Edinburgh, he began his career as an accountant with Virgin before moving into investment banking in the City of London. He went on to set up an international financial services company, which he sold to a Wall Street bank in 2001. Over his career he has run businesses in London, Hong Kong, Singapore, New York, Russia and Dubai, and has advised the Hong Kong and Singapore governments on promoting entrepreneurship.
In 2007 he founded Angels Den (co-founded with Lois Cook), which grew into one of the UK's largest angel-led investment networks, connecting entrepreneurs directly with angel investors across more than 10 countries and a base of several thousand registered angels. In 2008 he trademarked the term "SpeedFunding," Angels Den's signature format in which entrepreneurs deliver short, one-to-one elevator pitches to angels at offline events. He was named the most influential person in alternative finance by City A.M.
Morrow also serves as Chairman of the Board of Morrow Moylan Capital, a discretionary investment vehicle founded around 2020 and based in Hertfordshire that builds and manages early-stage startup portfolios for family offices and (ultra-)high-net-worth individuals. He is a frequent keynote speaker and educator on angel investing and crowdfunding, and writes/comments on startup funding in outlets such as Business Matters.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests at seed and early stage, typically through syndicated angel rounds rather than solo checks.
- Core belief: "money is just one part of angel investing" — startups benefit more from an angel's time, connections, network and experience than from capital alone; he looks for founders who want an engaged investor.
- Emphasizes curation and scrutiny: at Angels Den he personally curates deals, teaches angels, and matches lead investors with startups.
- Points to a strong survival track record ("over 92% of startups funded are still going strong") as evidence of his selectivity.
- Through Morrow Moylan Capital, focuses on building diversified early-stage portfolios for family offices and UHNW individuals, including financial-services and environmental-services companies.
- Interest in UK tech startups eligible for EIS via the Angels Den Tech Club co-investment fund.
