Background
Bion Ludwig is a General Partner at ABS Capital Partners, a Baltimore- and Washington, D.C.–based growth-equity firm. He joined ABS in July 2020 as a Venture Partner and was promoted to General Partner on April 28, 2021. At ABS he is responsible for sourcing new investment opportunities and providing strategic support to portfolio companies. Managing General Partner Mike Avon credited him with bringing "nearly two decades of experience founding, operating, growing, and selling successful technology and tech-enabled services businesses" to the firm.
Before ABS, Bion co-founded and was a General Partner of Savano Capital Partners, where he sourced, structured, supported, and exited a portfolio of late-stage, pre-IPO technology positions. Prior to Savano, he was a Principal — and the first non-founding employee — at SmithDefieux Capital Partners (also referenced as BrownSavano / SmithDefleux). His formal finance training came at GE Capital, where he was a member of the Financial Management Program (within Genworth Financial).
Bion is a serial entrepreneur who founded or co-founded roughly five companies, beginning around 2002 while still in college, where he also started an undergraduate entrepreneurial club. One of his early ventures grew to be among the top ~800 sites on the internet and was acquired in late 2006. He is also a published author whose startup book has sold more than 25,000 copies worldwide.
He earned a B.A. in Economics from the University of Virginia and is a Kauffman Fellow (Class 18). He has served on the Gen C Board of The Nature Conservancy. Outside of work he is a private pilot, an avid cyclist, and a skier.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- At ABS Capital, targets emerging-growth B2B software and tech-enabled services businesses, typically writing $10–$25M checks for minority or majority stakes.
- Looks for companies with $5–$50M in revenue, strong year-over-year growth, large addressable markets, and unit economics "at or nearing" profitability.
- Focuses on six verticals: FinTech, Healthcare, Human Capital/EdTech, Data/Analytics & Intelligence, Security/Compliance, and Smart Infrastructure.
- Emphasizes operationally active investing — ABS supports portfolio companies on teams & governance, data-driven strategy, technology acceleration, and go-to-market/market expansion — rather than passive capital.
- Special interest in founders in regions where private capital is less accessible (i.e., outside the coastal venture hubs).
- His earlier Savano/angel work skewed toward enterprise software, SaaS, and marketing automation, often via secondary/direct positions in proven late-stage companies.
