Background
Bob Goldstein is the Chief Executive Officer of Sonen Capital, a San Francisco–based impact investment management firm founded in 2011 (by Raul Pomares and Stuart Davidson). As CEO he is responsible for the overall management of the firm and the execution of its strategic goals, which center on delivering investment solutions that seek both competitive market returns and positive, measurable social and environmental impact.
Before Sonen, Goldstein spent much of his career at RCM Capital Management, the San Francisco–based global investment management firm (over $125B in assets under management across institutional and retail markets, since rebranded as Allianz Global Investors). He served there first as San Francisco Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel, and in 2010 became CEO and Managing Director, chairing the U.S. management committee and sitting on multiple global committees.
Earlier in his career, Goldstein practiced law as an associate at Weil, Gotshal & Manges, working out of the firm's New York, London, and Prague offices, where he focused on mergers and acquisitions, corporate transactions, and investment management matters.
He holds a B.A. from Hobart College and a J.D. from Brooklyn Law School (Class of 1990), where he was a member of the Law Review.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests on a "dual-mandate" basis: every investment must be financially viable and generate measurable social or environmental impact, with clear intentionality from company/portfolio-company leadership.
- In his own words: *"First and foremost, we are investors. But the potential for generating profits isn't the only thing that we consider."*
- Frames impact investing as a mainstream discipline in the making — he has predicted it will become standard investment practice rather than a specialized niche within roughly 10–15 years.
- Focus areas emphasize environmental sustainability: renewable energy, climate solutions, and sustainable agriculture, alongside broader ESG-aligned public and private market strategies.
- Works largely with institutional and mission-driven capital (foundations, family offices, endowments) transitioning portfolios toward fully impact-aligned allocations — not typically writing individual angel-sized checks into early-stage startups.
Notable Investments
- Renewable energy infrastructure in sub-Saharan Africa — expanding clean-energy access.
- Sustainable livestock farming in Australia — an investment aimed at reducing methane emissions from agriculture.
- Broader ESG-aligned public and private portfolios built for foundations and family offices seeking market-rate returns with impact.
