Background
Bob Hund is the Operating Partner at Oridian Capital Partners, the Washington, D.C.–based lower middle-market private equity firm that operated as HCI Equity Partners until its April 2026 rebrand. He joined the firm in 2016 and leads its operations team, working directly with portfolio-company CEOs and their C-suite leaders on value-creation strategies and portfolio-company consolidation. Beyond operations, Bob is also involved in reviewing new investment opportunities. HCI/Oridian traces its roots to Thayer Capital Partners and Hidden Creek Partners, and formalized its current form when the investment team established HCI in 2011.
Before entering private equity, Bob built an extensive operating career in industrial and manufacturing businesses. Most recently he served as President of Manitowoc Foodservice (now Welbilt), where he ran the company's global ~$1.7 billion commercial kitchen and icemaker equipment business, overseeing design, manufacturing, sales, and support. At Manitowoc he also held senior roles on the Cranes side of the business, serving as Executive Vice President leading customer service and M&A, and earlier as Vice President of global marketing and product management.
Earlier in his career, Bob spent 18 years at Caterpillar, Inc. in a wide range of roles: leading product and process development for the company's Mining and Construction Equipment division, serving as a Six Sigma division champion, acting as area manager for Central Europe, working as a commercial manager for new product lines, and holding sales positions across Europe and Southeast Asia — including hands-on work as a manufacturing and systems engineer on factory modernization projects. This gives him direct, operator-level experience in manufacturing, distribution, sourcing, product development, M&A, and international sales.
Bob holds an MBA from Millikin University, an MSIE in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University, and a BSME in Mechanical Engineering from Bradley University. He currently sits on the board of directors of Vermeer Corporation, the privately held industrial and agricultural equipment manufacturer.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in lower middle-market, growth-oriented, family- and founder-owned businesses — not startups or seed-stage companies.
- Concentrates on three durable sectors: service, distribution, and basic/technician-based manufacturing.
- Pursues a four-pillar strategy: (1) target entry points in large, stable, fragmented North American markets; (2) drive growth through M&A / buy-and-build; (3) emphasize operational excellence and integration; and (4) back durable business models such as basic manufacturing, distribution, and technician-based services.
- Bob's specific mandate is operational value creation — deploying "HCI's strategy of portfolio company consolidation, organic growth and extensive operational engagement," working alongside CEOs and management teams rather than passively holding.
- The firm brands itself as a founder-friendly partner (named to Inc.'s Top Founder-Friendly Investors list for multiple consecutive years), emphasizing continuity of management and honoring a company's origins.
