Bradford Hargreaves

Brad Hargreaves is a New York–based serial entrepreneur, operator, and investor with more than two decades building companies "at the intersection of the physical and digital worlds." He graduated from Yale University around 2008 with a degree in molecular biology (with additional study in economics). His first venture, the casual/competitive online-gaming studio GXStudios (co-founded ~2006), raised venture funding and reached notable adoption across Ivy League campuses before shutting down amid the 2008 financial crisis — an experience he credits with teaching him that a business "has to make money."

In 2011 he co-founded General Assembly in New York alongside Matthew Brimer, Jake Schwartz, and Adam Pritzker. Beginning as a co-working and events space, GA pivoted into one of the world's leading tech-education companies, offering immersive bootcamps in software engineering, data science, UX design, and product, plus a large enterprise-training division. General Assembly was acquired by the Adecco Group in 2018 for approximately $412.5 million.

In 2015 Hargreaves founded and led Common, a residential/co-living operating company built on the thesis that renters deserve better-designed, more flexible homes. Common raised roughly $110M+ from investors including Maveron, Norwest Venture Partners, 8VC, Fifth Wall, and Bezos Expeditions, and at its peak managed more than 7,000 units across dozens of U.S. cities. The company was acquired by Berlin-based Habyt in 2022. Today Hargreaves runs Thesis Driven, a widely-read subscription newsletter, workshop, and data platform (Operator Database, CapitalStack) covering innovation in real estate and the built environment.

Beyond founding companies, Hargreaves is a Venture Partner at Maveron (the Seattle consumer-focused VC co-founded by Howard Schultz and Dan Levitan, which was the first money into General Assembly) and an active angel investor and advisor. He serves on the board of Playcrafting and advises startups including Breef, Stacklist, and Arrange, and is featured among the people listed by Commonweal Ventures.

• Invests as an angel and early-stage (seed) backer, leveraging deep operating experience in consumer, education/future-of-work, and especially real estate technology and the "built world."
• Highly opinionated (and skeptical) about the "proptech" label, which he argues lumps together two very different businesses: *vertical software selling into real estate* (which can produce venture-scale returns) and *new real estate operating models / financial-engineering plays* (which he says have been "wholly disappointing," citing WeWork and Opendoor).
