Background

Brandon Godwin is a finance and private-equity professional who spent part of his career as an Associate (later Senior Associate) at Caymus Equity Partners, an Atlanta-based lower-middle-market private equity firm founded in 2001. In that role he worked on the firm's investments in founder-led services and industrial businesses, contributing to deal execution and portfolio growth within Caymus's small-business buyout strategy.

His background is rooted in accounting and transaction advisory. He earned a Bachelor of Science from North Carolina State University and a Master of Science from Wake Forest University, and he is a Certified Public Accountant licensed by the North Carolina State Board of CPA Examiners (Credential ID 42970). Before private equity, he worked at KPMG US as a Deal Advisory & Strategy Associate.

Godwin subsequently completed his MBA at the University of Michigan's Stephen M. Ross School of Business (2021–2023), where he was a Pinkert Healthcare Innovation Scholar (a full-tuition merit award), served as President of the Private Equity Club, advised the Wolverine Venture Fund, and scored a 760 (99th percentile) on the GMAT.

Today, rather than an active angel/seed investor, Godwin holds an operating-finance role: he is Assistant VP, Finance & Strategic Initiatives at VPL (Vantage Point Logistics), a healthcare-logistics and pharmacy-shipping company. His current work centers on finance and strategic initiatives rather than outbound venture investing.

Investment Thesis & Focus

The following reflects the Caymus Equity strategy Godwin worked within (his professional investing context), rather than a personal angel thesis:

  • Stage/type: Control-oriented growth equity and recapitalizations in the lower-middle market — not seed/angel checks.
  • Size: Businesses with roughly $2M–$12M EBITDA and $10M–$100M enterprise value.
  • Sectors: Business/professional services, healthcare services, consumer services, and industrials — with a repeated playbook in skilled-trades roll-ups (commercial HVAC, electrical, plumbing/MEP, environmental remediation, commercial lighting).
  • What makes them say yes: Caymus states it "only pursues opportunities where the firm can add meaningful value," backing "best-in-class management teams" and offering owners "partial liquidity while retaining a continued ownership stake and leadership position."
  • Operating angle: The firm markets "over a century of combined experience in private equity and operations" and provides on-site operational resources to help portfolio companies scale.

Notable Investments

  • Temp-Con / TriplePoint MEP — Commercial HVACR contractor acquired in March 2018 as a ~$25M-revenue single-location business in Olathe, KS; grew into a top-ten U.S. mechanical contractor and was sold to Stellex Capital Management on May 31, 2024.
  • Quality Environmental Services (QES) — Environmental remediation platform (asbestos/mold/lead abatement) in Beaverton, MI; acquired November 2023 as the third investment out of Caymus Fund II; added on Lakeshore Environmental Contractors in early 2024.
  • Valley Lighting — Commercial lighting and shading solutions provider in Linthicum Heights, MD; acquired May 1, 2025, described as Caymus's sixteenth platform investment and fourth out of Fund II.
  • Seneca Resources — Acquired by Caymus Equity (recent platform deal).
