Background

Brandon Muirhead is a Managing Director at The Cynosure Group, a Salt Lake City–based private investment firm that makes long-term equity investments in founder- and management-owned middle-market companies. He joined Cynosure in August 2022 and was elevated to Managing Director in the firm's 2025 promotions, where he focuses on sourcing, diligencing, and managing long-term investments. Firm leadership publicly cited "his combination of deep industry expertise, strong deal execution capabilities, and ability to create lasting impact within our portfolio companies."

Before Cynosure, Muirhead spent several years as a Director at Thompson Street Capital Partners (TSCP), a St. Louis private equity firm founded in 2000 that has acquired more than 100 companies and managed billions in equity. There he worked on transactions including the 2020 acquisition of data-security software provider PKWARE and the 2022 sale of Alpaca Audiology, the largest independent audiology clinic group in the U.S., to Switzerland's Sonova Holding AG. Earlier in his career he held roles at Lindsay Goldberg, Greenhill & Co., Apple, the U.S. Department of the Treasury, and the U.S. Department of State.

Muirhead earned a B.S. in Management from Brigham Young University (2005–2009) and an MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania (2014–2016). He served a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints mission in Slovenia/Croatia and later taught personal finance at the University of Ljubljana. Alongside his investing career, he is an Adjunct Professor of Finance at BYU's Marriott School of Business, where he teaches financial modeling.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests in established, profitable businesses — founder- and management-owned companies with roughly $5M+ of EBITDA, not early-stage startups.
  • Emphasizes long-hold, "patient capital" partnerships with strong management and family-owned businesses over a longer horizon than traditional PE — Cynosure explicitly offers a "collaborative approach … over a longer period than that of traditional private equity partners."
  • Flexible on structure: both minority and majority positions, with follow-on capital available, and check sizes generally in the $25M–$75M+ range at the firm level.
  • Sector emphasis on financial services, business & industrial services, and consumer services; his TSCP background adds software/data-security and healthcare-services experience.
  • Says yes when there is a founder seeking liquidity (full or partial), a durable business model, and a management team he can back for the long term.

Notable Investments

  • Service Truck Depot — provider of work-ready service/mechanics trucks and custom truck upfits; Cynosure Group invested alongside Rock Hill Capital in a transformational growth investment (March 2024).
  • Platform Accounting Group — cited among Cynosure's recent platform investments (accounting/professional services).
  • Alpaca Audiology (TSCP) — largest independent audiology clinic group in the U.S.; sold to Sonova Holding AG (March 2022).
  • PKWARE Inc. (TSCP) — data-protection/encryption software provider; acquired May 2020.
  • PestCo Holdings / Ecoteam (TSCP) — pest-control platform that made an add-on investment in Ecoteam (November 2021).
  • StayLock Storage (TSCP) — self-storage platform later sold to SROA Capital.
