Background

Brenda Irwin is a veteran healthcare venture capitalist with over two decades of experience investing in health technology companies. She holds a BSc in Human Biology with a Biomedical Science specialization and a BA in English from the University of Guelph, a BEd from Queen's University, and an MBA in Information Technology from the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia (completed jointly with Hong Kong University of Science & Technology). Before entering finance, Brenda worked as a middle school science teacher in Toronto.

In 1999, Brenda joined BDC Venture Capital (Business Development Bank of Canada) as a life sciences venture capitalist, where she spent 13 years on the healthcare team and personally managed a $100M+ portfolio of healthcare investments. Following her tenure at BDC, she founded AngelLinks Capital, managing investments for private investors across health and wellness sectors. In 2015, she co-founded Relentless Pursuit Partners, an angel investment group focused on sport and health technology, alongside Olympic gold medalist triathlete Simon Whitfield. In February 2018, she launched the Relentless Venture Fund, an early-stage VC vehicle focused on health technologies that deliver preventive health solutions and manage chronic conditions.

Brenda has extensive board governance experience across more than two dozen private and public companies and nonprofits. She chaired the Innovation, Academics & Research Committee at Providence Healthcare for six years, served a decade on the board of Take A Hike Youth at Risk Foundation, is a founding board member of the Table of Impact Investment Professionals (TiiP), and serves as a director and investment committee member of the medical technology consortium MEDTEQ+. Her industry honours include being named one of BC's Most Influential Women in Finance, a Business in Vancouver Top 40 Under 40 recipient, a four-time nominee for RBC's Canadian Women of Influence, and recognition for four consecutive years (2021-2024) among BC's 500 Most Influential Business Leaders. She was named CDL Associate of the Year in 2023.

Investment Thesis & Focus

Brenda and the Relentless Venture Fund invest in early-stage companies backed by leading-edge clinical research and technologies that deliver preventive health solutions and manage chronic conditions. The fund targets Canadian startups primarily at the Seed and Series A stages, with investments spanning HealthTech, life sciences, and digital health. Brenda's thesis centers on "measurable social impact" -- she seeks companies whose technologies can demonstrably improve health outcomes and access to healthcare, particularly in areas where traditional care models fall short. She emphasizes the importance of clinical validation, strong IP, and the emerging concept of "The Active Care Gap" -- the failure of conventional healthcare models to serve active populations with data-driven, relationship-centered care. The fund also prioritizes investments where data interpretation, not just data collection, drives patient value.
