Background

Brett Brewer is a Los Angeles–based internet entrepreneur turned venture investor. He earned a BA in business and economics from UCLA (conferred 1996) and began doing real estate deals as a teenager. In 1998 he co-founded Intermix Media, an internet holding company that built and launched several online businesses — most famously MySpace.com, along with SkillJam and Alena. As co-founder and an executive of Intermix, Brewer helped grow MySpace into one of the largest social networks of its era before the company was sold to News Corporation in 2005 for roughly $580–680 million (figures vary by source).

After the News Corp sale, Brewer became President and Vice Chairman of Adknowledge, a behavioral/online advertising technology company, where he helped scale revenue from roughly $40 million to over $300 million (with ~$55M EBITDA) over about seven years, attracting a large minority private-equity investment. Adknowledge earned Red Herring Top 100 recognition annually from 2006 to 2010, and Brewer served on its board as Vice Chairman.

In 2008 he co-founded Santa Monica–based Crosscut Ventures alongside Rick Smith and Brian Garrett, helping build it into one of Southern California's most prominent early-stage funds — over $300–350 million in AUM across five funds and 170+ portfolio companies. As a Founding General Partner and Managing Director, Brewer led notable deals including Branch, Pacaso, and Rx Redefined. On January 24, 2025, Crosscut announced Brewer would leave the firm's day-to-day operations while continuing to manage portfolio companies in Crosscut Funds 1–5. In March 2025 he joined Sequence Equity (formerly TXV Partners), a private investment firm focused on human optimization and sports, as Managing Partner leading its venture capital practice. Brewer is also an Industry Advisor / faculty member with USC Annenberg's Digital Media Management program and has spoken at events such as the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Backs "scrappy, capital-efficient founders" — his approach emphasizes lean operations and founder tenacity, reflecting his own bootstrapping-to-exit experience.
  • Focuses on seed and early-stage companies, historically with a strong Los Angeles / Southern California lens; a core part of his Crosscut mission was empowering local entrepreneurs with both capital and operational guidance.
  • Sector interests span consumer internet, media, marketplaces, and advertising/adtech, drawing directly on his MySpace/Intermix and Adknowledge operating background.
  • At Sequence Equity, his mandate broadens into technology, sports, and "human optimization," where he leads the firm's venture strategy alongside co-managing partners Marcus Stroud, Brad Palmer, and Brandon Allen.
  • Values operational partnership: his stated motivation for founding Crosscut was to give local founders hands-on help, not just a check.
