Brian Copeland

Brian Copeland is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) who spent the bulk of his career in corporate and university financial administration in West Michigan. Before entering higher education, he spent roughly 18 years at Display Pack, Inc., a Grand Rapids manufacturing company, serving as Director of Finance and Administration from 1989 onward. In that role he oversaw a broad operational portfolio including purchasing, risk management, human resources, quality control, computer services, and logistics.

In 2007, Copeland joined Grand Valley State University as Assistant Vice President for Business and Finance, succeeding Jim Bachmeier, who had been promoted. His responsibilities spanned accounting functions (payroll, accounts payable/receivable, student accounts) and business services (purchasing, risk management, food service, bookstore operations, and event planning). He also served as Assistant Treasurer for the university's Board of Trustees. He was later elevated to Associate Vice President for Business and Finance.

Copeland retired from GVSU on January 30, 2020, after 13 years of service; the university held a celebration in his honor at the Kirkhof Center. GVSU Vice President Greg Sanial described his tenure as "nothing short of remarkable." He was succeeded in the Associate Vice President role by Craig Wieschhorster.

Copeland holds both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree (MBA) from Western Michigan University and is a CPA. Beyond his professional work, he has coaching experience, having served as a varsity tennis coach at East Kentwood High School and volunteering with youth soccer and baseball organizations.
