Background
Bruce Michael Pym was a Seattle-area corporate lawyer, investment-services executive, and investment-banking advisor. He was born on September 29, 1942, in Alameda, California, grew up in the Seattle area, and earned both his undergraduate degree and J.D. from the University of Washington.
Pym began his legal career with a clerkship for Chief Justice Robert Finley of the Washington State Supreme Court. He then practiced law for 24 years at Graham & Dunn and for another 15 years at Heller Ehrman, focusing principally on mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, and complex ownership-succession transactions. At Heller Ehrman, he served for a period as chair of the firm's corporate practices worldwide.
After retiring from legal practice at the end of 2007, Pym moved into investment services. He served as president and CEO of Elliott Cove Capital Management, a registered investment adviser, and joined Meridian Capital in 2013. At Meridian, he served as Managing Director and later Board Advisor, with a focus on family-business transition and strategic advisory work. His LinkedIn profile states that he retired as of June 30, 2024; his obituary states that he died in Switzerland on August 20, 2024.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Public sources support an advisory and corporate-finance profile rather than a personal angel-investor profile; I found no verified seed-stage investments, check sizes, or personal angel portfolio attributed to Pym.
- Pym’s stated focus at Meridian was family business, ownership succession, corporate governance, M&A, and complex ownership-transition transactions.
- Meridian’s relevant work includes helping business owners evaluate transaction options from minority recapitalizations to full sale processes, plus equity capital raises, debt capital raises, growth equity, and refinancing.
- Pym emphasized directness in family-business transition work, writing: “Family business succession requires a high level of honesty and candor within the family itself.”
- His background suggests he was most relevant to owners with transition, recapitalization, governance, or succession issues rather than founders seeking a conventional seed angel check.
Notable Investments
- Tedder Industries LLC - Meridian advised Tedder Industries, a manufacturer of holsters and accessories, on its September 2018 recapitalization by Main Street Capital Corporation; Pym was quoted in Meridian’s announcement on the company’s founder-led growth story.
- No verified personal angel investments found - Public sources reviewed did not substantiate the stub claim that Pym was an angel investor making seed-round investments.
