Background
Bryan Taylor is a Managing Partner at Advent International and Head of the firm's Technology Investment Team, based in Palo Alto. He joined Advent on February 1, 2019, bringing more than 18 years of technology investing experience. Under his leadership, Advent's technology team concentrates on "growth equity and buyout opportunities across a variety of software, data and technology-enabled services subsectors, primarily in North America and Europe."
Before Advent, Taylor was co-head of TPG Capital's technology group, where he helped build the firm's software investment capabilities and jointly led a roughly 20-person team. Earlier in his career, he was a co-founder and Managing Director at Symphony Technology Group, a private equity firm focused exclusively on software and technology-services investments and on operational improvement of software companies. He began his career as a strategy consultant at Bain & Company (approximately 1992–2000), working in San Francisco and Los Angeles on private equity and technology engagements.
Taylor earned a BA in political science, with honors, from Stanford University, and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He holds several board positions, including at Forescout Technologies, McAfee, and Prometheus Group.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Stage & scale: Large-cap growth equity and buyouts in technology — not seed or angel. Advent has invested in technology for nearly three decades and deploys checks at PE scale.
- Sectors: Software, data, and technology-enabled services subsectors.
- Geography: Primarily North America and Europe, with a stated bullishness on European tech: *"It feels as though we're approaching the golden years of tech investing in Europe. There is a dynamic of increased spend around innovation."*
- Sourcing philosophy: *"We have 200 investment professionals who are creating deals from the bottom up, finding off-the-beaten-path opportunities."*
- Underwriting to exits: *"We systematically make exits part of our underwriting. We're looking for what we call multiple exit ramps."*
- On European scale-ups: *"We have seen a maturing of a very large cohort of companies founded in the last 5–10 years that have figured out how to go across borders."*
