Background

Bryce Fort is a Founding Partner and Managing Director of Emerging Capital Partners (ECP), one of the oldest and largest private equity managers focused exclusively on Africa. He joined the firm in 2002, when it was still part of Emerging Markets Partnership (EMP) and launching what became one of the first large-scale pan-African private equity platforms. At ECP he has been responsible for sourcing, analyzing and recommending investments, running due diligence and leading transaction teams, and he has been closely involved in the management-company's operations and strategy. Fort is based in East Africa (Nairobi), and his LinkedIn and phone (Kenya +254) reflect that regional base.

Before entering African private equity, Fort worked in Deutsche Bank AG's European Healthcare Corporate Finance Group in London, executing M&A and equity and debt financings for pharmaceutical, biotech and medical-device companies. He holds a bachelor's degree, cum laude, in computer engineering with a minor in economics from Lehigh University. (Bloomberg records his full name as "Bryce Louise Fort.")

Over two decades at ECP, Fort has sat on the boards of numerous portfolio companies across the continent, including IHS Holdings (pan-African telecom towers), Java House (East African quick-service restaurants), Wananchi Group Holdings and Maarifa Education (East Africa), Cellcom Telecommunications (West Africa), Remitix Holdings (pan-African), and New Dawn Mining and Central African Gold (Zimbabwe). He is closely associated with ECP's most prominent success, IHS Towers, which listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2021.

In July 2021, Fort — together with fellow ECP partner Paul Maasdorp — joined the leadership team of Alterra Capital Partners, an Africa-focused private equity firm spun out of The Carlyle Group's Africa team in 2020, while continuing to steward existing ECP investments. His current active platform is therefore best understood as spanning both ECP's legacy portfolio and Alterra's new mid-market vehicle.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests in African growth-stage and mid-market companies, favoring established businesses with real revenues, strong management, and the potential to scale regionally or pan-continentally — a fundamentally different profile from the "seed round / angel" label in the source stub.
  • Sector conviction in enabling infrastructure and the emerging consumer: telecom and communications infrastructure (towers, connectivity), financial services, consumer goods and services, and utilities/infrastructure.
  • Long-horizon, hands-on ownership: takes board seats and works operationally with portfolio companies to build regional champions (e.g., helping build IHS into a NYSE-listed global tower operator and expanding Java House across East Africa).
  • Backs businesses that can prove the "Africa growth" story to global capital — ECP has raised over US$2bn and syndicates alongside DFIs and global institutions (IFC, Wendel, Goldman Sachs and others co-invested in IHS), so he looks for companies that are institutional-quality and exit-ready.

Notable Investments

  • IHS Towers / IHS Holdings — Pan-African (and Latin American) telecom tower operator; ECP was an early growth investor, and Fort was a board member and a driving force behind IHS's 2021 NYSE listing (ECP's flagship exit story).
  • Java House — East African quick-service restaurant chain; ECP held it via a Mauritius holding company and sold its stake in 2017.
  • Wananchi Group Holdings — East African cable/broadband and PayTV group (Zuku brand).
  • Cellcom Telecommunications — West African mobile operator.
  • Maarifa Education — East African education business.
  • Remitix Holdings — Pan-African (payments/remittance-related) holding.
  • New Dawn Mining and Central African Gold — Zimbabwe-focused mining companies where Fort held board seats.
