Cam Lanier

Campbell B. "Cam" Lanier III was one of the American Southeast's most prolific early-stage technology and telecommunications investors, with an investing career spanning more than 40 years. Born in Langdale, Alabama on October 22, 1950, he graduated from Presbyterian College in 1972 and went on to found and back a long series of early-stage telecom and technology companies out of a base in West Point, Georgia, and Lanett, Alabama.

He co-founded Interstate Communications (Telecom*USA), which grew to become the fourth-largest long-distance provider in the U.S. before being acquired by MCI for $1.2 billion in 1990. He was the founding investor and Chairman of Powertel (which later became part of T-Mobile), acquired by Deutsche Telekom for $4.2 billion in 2000, and was a founding investor in MindSpring, valued at roughly $1 billion at the time of its merger with EarthLink. These outcomes established his reputation as a "Georgia investing legend."

Lanier served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ITC Holding Company, LLC and ITC Capital Partners, LLC — diversified holding companies headquartered in West Point, Georgia — and joined Kinetic Ventures (an Atlanta-based VC firm founded in 1985) as a Senior Director. Through these vehicles he was a founding or lead investor in ITC DeltaCom, InterCall, Knology, and Firethorn, among others, and he directed numerous portfolio companies across communications, software, and financial services.

His investment activity extended beyond core telecom into financial services, restaurant management solutions, on-line training services, and even canine detection services, reflecting a broad, opportunistic, operator-led approach to early-stage backing.

• Opportunistic breadth: Willing to invest well outside core tech — restaurant/hospitality tech, online training, and specialty services — when he backed strong operators.
