Background

Canica AS is the private holding and investment company that has managed the fortune of the Hagen family, one of Norway's wealthiest. The capital base was built by Stein Erik Hagen (b. 22 July 1956), who co-founded the RIMI discount grocery chain with his father in the 1970s and expanded it (including Rimi Baltic in the 1990s) before selling to Sweden's ICA and Ahold in the 2000s. He reinvested most of the proceeds into the branded-consumer-goods group Orkla ASA, where he served as a long-time chairman and remained the largest shareholder through Canica. Hagen studied at Kjøpmannsinstituttet (now part of BI Norwegian Business School). He died of a heart attack on 4 May 2026 at age 69.

Ownership of Canica has long since passed to Hagen's daughter, Caroline Marie Hagen Kjos, a Switzerland-based businesswoman who inherited the bulk of the family's investment company as early as 2009 and was elected Chair of Canica's board in 2014. Following her father's death in 2026, she took indirect control of the family company through the holding vehicle Tvist 1 AS and moved to consolidate the family's Orkla voting shares. She has been deeply involved in Canica's management for years and also sits on Orkla's governance bodies.

Operationally, Canica runs from twin hubs in Oslo and Pfäffikon, Switzerland. Day-to-day leadership in Norway is led by CEO Jan Ole Stangeland, COO Kjetil Wisløff, and CFO Morten Hilstad; the Swiss entity (Canica AG) is led by CEO Christer Kjos, with an investment team including portfolio managers and investment directors who run the financial-investments book. The Norway board is chaired by Caroline Hagen Kjos, alongside members including Jo Olav Lunder.

Canica describes itself as offering "core expertise within the fields of business development and finance, as well as capital and network in order to create value and employment in a long-term perspective" — a posture of patient, active ownership rather than venture-style portfolio churn.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Active, long-term ownership. Industrial holdings are characterized by strategic, often majority, stakes held for the long term — "active long-term ownership" within retail, FMCG, real estate, and manufacturing.
  • Branded consumer goods and services are the historical core competence, traceable to the RIMI/Orkla heritage.
  • Three-pillar structure: (1) Industrial investments (large strategic stakes), (2) Financial investments — direct stakes in private and public companies, co-investments via joint ventures/partnerships, and fund commitments "across seed, early stage, growth, and pre-IPO stages," and (3) Real estate.
  • Financial book spans the full company life cycle — "both start-up, growth and maturity" — which is the channel through which Canica touches early-stage and venture-type deals (e.g., life sciences).
  • Value-creation levers: capital, business-development expertise, finance know-how, and an extensive Nordic network, applied "responsibly and sustainably."

Notable Investments

  • Orkla ASA — ~25% stake; leading Nordic branded-consumer-goods group (turnover ~NOK 70.7bn). Canica's anchor industrial holding.
  • Komplett Group — ~42% stake; leading Scandinavian online electronics retailer. (Also participated in a 2022 PIPE financing.)
  • Anora — ~22.4% stake; leading Nordic wine & spirits brand house, exporting to 30+ markets.
  • Jernia — 100% owned; Norwegian hardware/home-improvement retail chain (130+ stores).
  • F&H Group A/S — 100% owned; Scandinavia's leading "Kitchen Living Dining" brand house (~12,000 products, 40 brands).
  • The Well — 100% owned; large spa and lifestyle resort near Oslo (104 rooms).
  • Oncoinvent — financial/life-sciences investment; Canica's latest reported portfolio addition (Dec 2024), in drug discovery / radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Curida — Norwegian pharmaceutical manufacturer; Private Equity round, April 2024 (co-investors incl. Investinor, Farvatn).
  • Cytovation — Norwegian immuno-oncology biotech; ~$8M Series A (June 2023, with Sandwater).
