Background

Carlo De Benedetti, born 14 November 1934 in Turin into an Italian Jewish family, is one of postwar Italy's most prominent industrialists and financiers. He earned a degree in electrical engineering from the Polytechnic University of Turin and began his career in his father's business, Compagnia Italiana Tubi Metallici Flessibili. He built and led Gilardini (Chairman/CEO 1972–1976) and, famously, served as CEO of Fiat for barely four months in 1976 before resigning over a disagreement on layoffs.

His defining chapter was Olivetti: he joined in 1978 and, as chairman from 1983 until 1996, pivoted the company from mechanical typewriters toward computers and, in the mid-1990s, launched the telecoms ventures Omnitel and Infostrada. In 1976 he acquired the CIR Group (Compagnie Industriali Riunite), turning a Turin tanning company into a major listed holding controlled by the family's COFIDE, with interests spanning media, healthcare (KOS), automotive components (Sogefi) and energy. Through CIR/Gruppo Editoriale L'Espresso he controlled leading center-left titles including *La Repubblica*, *L'Espresso* and *La Stampa*, positioning him as a media counterweight to Silvio Berlusconi — a rivalry that culminated in a 2013 Italian Supreme Court ruling ordering Berlusconi's Fininvest to pay CIR roughly €494 million (the "Lodo Mondadori" affair).

De Benedetti retired from CIR's executive roles in January 2009 and later handed family media control to his three sons (Rodolfo, Marco, Edoardo); they subsequently sold the GEDI group to the Agnelli-Elkann family against his wishes. In response, in 2020 he personally invested about €10 million to found *Domani*, a liberal Rome daily. He holds dual Italian and Swiss citizenship (naturalized Swiss in 2009) and chairs the Rodolfo De Benedetti Foundation (est. 1998), which funds research on European labor-market and welfare policy. His net worth has been estimated at roughly $1 billion.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests as a strategic principal, typically via personal/family vehicles rather than a formal venture fund, backing businesses aligned with his lifelong media and information-technology interests.
  • Concentration in media, digital content, publishing and ad-tech, reflecting decades running Olivetti and the L'Espresso/Repubblica publishing empire.
  • Active in Israeli technology deals, joining larger later-stage financing rounds as a name-brand strategic backer rather than a first-check seed investor.
  • Long time horizon and control-oriented mindset carried over from industrial holding investing (CIR, COFIDE, Sogefi, KOS) — he prefers sectors he understands deeply and where his network and media assets add value.

Notable Investments

  • Taboola — content-discovery / native-advertising platform; participated as a strategic investor in the $117M round (Feb 2015, led by Fidelity); position exited around June 2021 (Taboola later went public).
  • Domani — Italian daily newspaper he founded and funded (~€10M seed in 2020; endowment transferred to a foundation with ~€4M in 2025).
  • CIR Group / COFIDE portfolio (as controlling shareholder): Sogefi (auto components), KOS (healthcare), and formerly GEDI (media: Repubblica, La Stampa, L'Espresso), Olivetti, Omnitel and Infostrada.
