Background
Chandra Tjan is Co-Founder and General Partner of Alpha JWC Ventures, a Southeast Asian early-to-growth stage investment firm that debuted in Indonesia in 2015. Alpha JWC describes itself as a Southeast Asian investment firm with deep Indonesian roots, 90+ active portfolio companies, and US $700 million of AUM.
Before venture capital, Tjan worked in banking at Citigroup and Credit Suisse in Singapore. The University of Sydney profile says he completed a Bachelor of Commerce in 2002, majoring in finance, economics, and management, then returned to Indonesia and joined Citibank before being posted to Singapore. He later moved to Credit Suisse and shifted toward investment and technology after seeing early mobile internet and payment behavior in Japan.
In 2009, Tjan co-founded East Ventures and became one of the early venture capitalists focused on Indonesia. Alpha JWC’s biography says that during this early period he invested in dozens of startups, including Tokopedia and Traveloka, two Indonesian unicorns. A DailySocial interview republished by Alpha JWC says he was East Ventures’ sole full-time partner focused on Indonesia at that time.
Tjan co-founded Alpha JWC Ventures in 2015 with Jefrey Joe and Will Ongkowidjaja. He has served on boards of regional technology companies including Funding Societies/Modalku, Carro, GudangAda, Bobobox, OnlinePajak, Kopi Kenangan, and Ajaib, according to Alpha JWC and University of Sydney profiles.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Alpha JWC says its model is “more than just an investor” and positions the firm as a trusted partner that supports founders with experience, skills, know-how, and networks.
- Tjan’s stated investment filter is “people, product, and potential”: founder quality, products that solve real needs, and the potential to expand in features and users. He has said founder quality is the most important of the three because ideas and products can change early.
- Alpha JWC is sector-agnostic, investing across business ideas and sectors with strong growth potential and positive societal impact.
- The firm mainly focuses on early-stage investments and has historically targeted 8-10 new startups per year, while also participating in follow-on rounds up to Series B.
- Tjan emphasizes fundamentals and unit economics: Alpha JWC has stated that founders should understand unit economics and maintain financial accountability from day one.
- His Indonesia thesis is that the digital ecosystem remains early, with large untapped demand beyond Jakarta and in tier-two and tier-three cities.
- Tjan has described Alpha JWC’s opportunity as backing founders who can become “industry champions” in Indonesia and Southeast Asia, and has cited fintech, consumer, e-commerce, payments, lending, and new retail/F&B as areas where Alpha JWC has tried to be early.
