Background
Wu Chaoyang is the founder, chairman, and managing partner of Leading Capital (力鼎资本), a Chinese private-equity and M&A investment group he established in 2007. He brings roughly three decades of capital-markets experience. He began his career in 1992 at Junan Securities (君安证券), where he rose to Deputy General Manager of the Investment Banking Department and then General Manager of the Asset Management Department. After Junan's merger into Guotai Junan Securities, he served as Deputy Director of the Asset Management headquarters, and later as Vice President of Bairui Trust (百瑞信托). Along the way he led the shareholding-system restructuring and A-share IPOs of numerous state and private enterprises, including names such as Liaotong Chemical, Salonpas, Dalian Thermal Power, and Yankuang Coal.
He holds a Master's degree in Economics from Nankai University (南开大学).
Since founding Leading Capital in 2007, Wu has built the firm into a multi-platform investment group anchored by Shanghai Liding Investment Management Co., Ltd., Beijing Liding Xingye Venture Investment Management Center, and Shenzhen Liding Fund Management Co., Ltd. Under his leadership the firm has organized and executed cumulative investment and M&A transactions on the order of RMB 10 billion (100亿元) across nearly 100 companies, of which more than 20 have completed IPOs. Reported assets under management are in the range of RMB 6 billion across roughly 14 funds, run by a team of 60+ professionals spread across several Chinese cities and Hong Kong.
Wu has been repeatedly recognized in industry rankings, including selections to "China's Top 50 / Top 100 Best Private Equity Investors" lists compiled by ChinaVenture (投中) and affiliated media, cited on the firm's site through 2025.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests primarily in growth-stage and pre-IPO companies, with a strong secondary emphasis on M&A and buyout ("new blue-chip value integration") strategies rather than pure early-stage angel bets.
- Bets on execution and business-model innovation over raw technology novelty. In his own words on the Tianhao Energy deal: *"We invested in Tianhao when it hadn't yet achieved profitability — we favored its broad prospects in waste-heat power generation and the competitive advantages of the EMC (contract energy management) model."*
- Believes durable advantage comes from operational excellence: *"The advantage lies in model innovation… combining technical superiority with model innovation requires a team with very strong execution capability."*
- Has publicly rejected a *"唯上市论"* ("IPO-is-everything") mindset, arguing that early-stage investment and M&A funds will become increasingly important in China's market.
- Core sectors: consumer services, healthcare, environmental protection/energy efficiency, and telecom/electronics.
- Comfortable entering companies during distress or liquidity crunches (e.g., deploying capital into Tianhao during the 2009–2010 post-financial-crisis period) when fundamentals and management are strong.
Notable Investments
- Tianhao Energy (天壕能源) — Waste-heat power generation using the EMC (contract energy management) model; Leading Capital invested 80M+ RMB across two rounds starting ~2009 and held ~16.25% pre-IPO; company listed on ChiNext in June 2012.
- Toread (探路者) — Chinese outdoor-gear/apparel brand; a Leading Capital IPO-sponsored portfolio company.
- Guanhao Biotech (冠昊生物) — Regenerative biomedical-materials company; cited among the firm's IPO exits.
- Firm-level track record: nearly 100 companies backed and 20+ portfolio companies taken public across the firm's history.
