Charles Hupfer

Charles J. Hupfer built a 35-year finance career at Sonoco Products Company, one of the largest diversified global packaging companies. He joined Sonoco in November 1975 as manager of financial reporting, after spending roughly six years at the public accounting firm Coopers & Lybrand. He rose through a succession of finance roles: director of international finance (1980), director of tax and audit (1985), treasurer (1988), and vice president, secretary and treasurer (1995).

In 2002 Hupfer was elected Chief Financial Officer of Sonoco — initially on an interim basis in February 2002 after the prior CFO's resignation, then confirmed in the role. In April 2005 he was promoted to Senior Vice President and CFO while retaining the Corporate Secretary title, and he served on the company's executive committee. He held the CFO role until reaching Sonoco's mandatory retirement age of 65, retiring in May 2011. He was succeeded as CFO by Barry L. Saunders.

Hupfer holds a B.S. in accounting from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an MBA in management from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He is both a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Certified Management Accountant (CMA). Locally, he has been active in Hartsville community and education institutions, including membership in the Byerly Foundation and prior service on the Coker College Board of Trustees.

As a caveat on the data: the source stub framed Charles Hupfer as a seed-stage "Institutional Investor." Research finds no public record supporting that characterization. Hupfer is a retired corporate CFO; his most relevant "investing" experience is leading corporate acquisitions and joint ventures for a public company, not backing startups.
