Background

Charles D. King is a Co-Founder and General Partner of MaC Venture Capital, a majority Black-owned, seed-stage venture firm based in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area. MaC was formed in 2019 through the merger of Cross Culture Ventures (co-founded by Marlon Nichols) and M Ventures (co-founded by Michael Palank and former Washington, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty). King is one of the firm's four founding general partners, alongside Nichols, Fenty, and Palank, and applies a "cultural investment" framework that backs companies aligned with emerging shifts in behavior and consumer trends.

Before venture capital, King built his career in entertainment. He spent roughly a decade at William Morris Endeavor (WME), where he became the first Black partner in the agency's 100-plus-year history — and, by most accounts, the first Black partner at any major talent agency. In 2015 he left WME to found MACRO, a multi-platform media company built to represent the voice and perspectives of people of color. As Founder & CEO, King has grown MACRO into an operation spanning MACRO Film Studios, MACRO Television Studios, the Brand MACRO creative agency, and a majority interest in the talent-management firm M88.

King's media track record is substantial: MACRO's slate has earned 15 Academy Award nominations and multiple wins, including a 2021 Best Picture Oscar nomination for *Judas and the Black Messiah*, on which King was a producer alongside Ryan Coogler and Shaka King — reported as the first all-Black team of producers nominated for Best Picture. He earned his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University and a law degree from Howard University School of Law, and he serves on boards including the Sundance Institute, College Track, and American Cinematheque.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests at seed stage, with checks in roughly the $500K–$1.5M range (about $1M typical) through MaC Venture Capital.
  • Focuses on the intersection of technology and culture — companies whose products ride durable shifts in consumer behavior, media consumption, and demographics.
  • Deep concentration in media/content, entertainment, and sports, reflecting King's operating background, but MaC invests broadly across consumer and tech verticals.
  • MaC's stated approach: back founders and companies "aligned with the emerging behaviors of an increasingly diverse and global marketplace" — a cultural-investing lens that treats diversity of founders and markets as an edge rather than a niche.
  • Values founders with domain authority and cultural fluency; King has historically co-invested with high-profile operators from entertainment and sports (e.g., Nas, Andre Iguodala, John Legend) on ventures bridging tech and creative industries.

Notable Investments

  • Genies — Avatar/digital-identity technology company; early investor (2017).
  • Walker & Company Brands — Health and beauty products for people of color (maker of Bevel); backed at seed and Series B before its acquisition by Procter & Gamble.
  • Mass Appeal — Hip-hop media and content company (co-founded/backed by Nas); Series A (2017).
  • Remezcla — Digital media brand focused on Latino youth culture; Series A (2017).
  • *(Note: several of the above reflect King's angel/pre-MaC and MACRO-affiliated investing; MaC Venture Capital's broader seed portfolio spans dozens of consumer and technology startups across its Fund I and Fund II.)*
