Background

Charlie Martin is a serial healthcare operator and investor with more than 50 years of experience building and running large, complex hospital systems. He earned a BS from Southern Adventist University before entering healthcare management. His early career included serving as President, Director, and COO of General Care Corp., which he transformed into an acute-care hospital company that Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) acquired for $78 million in 1980.

Martin then spent roughly a decade as Executive Vice President and a board director at HCA, where he helped expand the company's footprint from about 140 to more than 200 owned and managed hospitals. He subsequently served as President, COO, and director of HealthTrust Inc., a company spun out of HCA that went public in 1991 and was later reacquired by HCA for $3.6 billion in 1994. From 1992 to 1997 he was Chairman, President, and CEO of OrNda HealthCorp, which he grew from $450 million to roughly $3 billion in revenue in four years, making it the nation's third-largest investor-owned hospital chain before its $3.2 billion sale to Tenet Healthcare in 1997.

In 1998 Martin founded Vanguard Health Systems, serving as its Founder, Chairman, and CEO for sixteen years. Under his leadership Vanguard grew from zero to 28 hospitals and approximately $6.5 billion in revenue. The Blackstone Group acquired a controlling stake valuing the company at roughly $1.75 billion in 2004; Vanguard went public in 2011 and was acquired by Tenet Healthcare for $4.3 billion in 2013.

Martin founded Martin Ventures (originally organized as The Martin Companies, rebranded to Martin Ventures) in 2009 to invest in and build the next generation of healthcare companies. He has also served on numerous boards, including the University of Pennsylvania's Penn Law and RAND Health, one of the world's largest independent health research organizations.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests exclusively in healthcare: digital health, healthcare services, value-based care, healthcare technology-enabled/SaaS services, AI, and data science.
  • Stated mission is to back businesses that "optimize existing healthcare provider businesses, develop new and innovative models of care, and empower the healthcare consumer" — making providers more effective while giving patients tools to control their own health.
  • Invests its own and advised capital from the balance sheet rather than through a conventional fund, allowing flexibility to partner at all stages, including co-creating companies with founders.
  • Typical initial check of $2–4 million, reserved for "exceptional founders with strong growth potential."
  • Looks for technology-enabled/SaaS models, demonstrated year-over-year growth, roughly $3M+ in annual revenue, and valuations grounded in revenue or market multiples.
