Background
Charles "Chal" Smiley is a CFA charterholder who earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance with a minor in Economics from Florida State University. His career has centered on lower middle-market investing — providing debt and control equity to established, often family- or founder-owned companies rather than early-stage startups.
Smiley spent the core of his career at Main Street Capital Corporation, the Houston-based business development company (BDC) that invests debt and equity in lower middle-market and private companies. He joined as an analyst/associate around 2014 and progressed through the ranks — Associate (2014–2018), Vice President (2018–2020), and Director (2019–2020) — working on management buyouts, recapitalizations, and growth financings. Before Main Street, he held a credit-focused role at Crestline Investors, an alternative-investment manager in Fort Worth, Texas.
In 2020 he left institutional investing to become Co-Founder and CEO of RDY, a consumer-technology startup building a digital marketplace/app for independent and specialty coffee shops (aggregating local coffee shops into a single ordering platform). He was based in the Los Angeles area during this period.
He has since returned to private equity as a Director at KLH Capital, a Tampa, Florida firm founded in 2005 that invests in family- and founder-owned lower middle-market companies. At KLH he executes transactions, leads due diligence and financial analysis, manages portfolio companies, and serves on the boards of several of them.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in established lower middle-market companies, not startups — control buyouts, recapitalizations, growth capital, and mezzanine/debt financing.
- Strong emphasis on family-owned and founder-owned businesses seeking a capital partner for succession, liquidity, or growth (KLH Capital's core mandate).
- Sector interests reflected in his recent deal activity include environmental and safety services and other essential/industrial services.
- Value-add is operational and board-level: he directly oversees and sits on the boards of portfolio companies, helping expand service offerings and geographic reach.
- His BDC background at Main Street Capital means he is comfortable structuring flexible debt-plus-equity capital solutions for lower middle-market owners.
