Background

Chris Campbell is a Partner and Head of New Investments at Rcapital, the self-described "leading carve-out and special situations investor to the UK mid-market," which has completed 90+ investments since its founding in 2004. He joined the firm in 2014 and spends most of his time sourcing, evaluating and executing new investment opportunities from a broad network of intermediaries and advisers across the UK. He sits on the boards of several portfolio companies and is a member of Rcapital's Investment Committee.

Before Rcapital, Campbell spent roughly a decade in KPMG's Transactions & Restructuring / Restructuring team, advising corporates, lenders and other stakeholders in complex and often distressed situations. His work there spanned M&A and buy-side support, working-capital optimisation and operational restructuring, and included a 12-month secondment to the risk team of a major UK clearing bank — experience directly relevant to the distressed and carve-out deals Rcapital pursues.

Campbell is a Chartered Accountant and a member of the Institute for Turnaround. At Rcapital he has been involved in more than 25 investments and has personally sourced milestone deals including Summit Media, Cluttons LLP and Nasmyth Group. He describes the firm's investing style as "fast moving, challenging but exhilarating," emphasising that the team works closely with management and advisers and can "execute in a matter of days."

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests in established UK/Northern European mid-market businesses (~£10m–£350m turnover) that are facing a "special situation" — a carve-out from a larger parent, a turnaround, a shareholder dispute, underperformance, or a complex exit
  • Deploys up to ~£50m of investment and growth capital per transaction, combining capital with hands-on operational and restructuring support
  • Prizes speed and deal certainty: the team stresses the ability to complete complex transactions "in a matter of days" and to give vendors and stakeholders certainty of execution
  • Sector-agnostic — says "yes" based on the situation (complexity, motivated vendor, operational upside) rather than a specific industry
  • Increasingly focused on cross-border corporate carve-outs, having completed five in the six months to mid-2025

Notable Investments

  • F2 Chemicals (2025) — Preston-based manufacturer of fluorinated compounds, carved out from Japanese listed parent Resonac (completion Sept 2025); Rcapital's fifth cross-border carve-out in six months
  • UK General Insurance & Precision Partnership Limited (PPL) (2022) — acquired alongside Montague; MGA / insurance services businesses
  • Cluttons LLP — long-established UK property consultancy and chartered surveyors (deal sourced by Campbell)
  • Summit Media — digital media / marketing business (deal sourced by Campbell)
  • Nasmyth Group — precision engineering / aerospace components group (deal sourced by Campbell)
  • Archant (2020) — regional newspaper and magazine publisher; Rcapital backed the ~£5m takeover of the publisher
  • Avonside Energy — roofing / renewable energy installation business in the Rcapital portfolio
  • Other sourced deals include Independent Group, Greens, Wrexham Wire and Systems Training
