Background
Chris Cathcart is a Managing Partner of The Halifax Group, a Washington, D.C.–based private investment firm founded in 1999 that partners with founders and managers of lower middle-market companies. He joined Halifax in 2007 and today serves on both the firm's Management Committee and Investment Committee, where he leads business development — owning the origination, evaluation, and recommendation of new investment opportunities and managing the firm's network of deal sources.
Cathcart built and implemented Halifax's origination strategy from the ground up. According to the firm, he has directly sourced 12 platform investments representing more than $500 million of invested equity, and established an international sourcing network that delivers over 1,200 investment opportunities to the firm annually. He has also been central to Halifax's capital formation, playing a leading role in raising three funds totaling more than $1.1 billion in committed capital and leading fundraising for Halifax IV, a 2018-vintage $650 million fund. He was promoted to Managing Partner (alongside Scott Plumridge) on November 12, 2019, after serving as a Partner and Investment Committee member since 2016.
Cathcart holds an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, with concentrations in finance, accounting, and entrepreneurship, and graduated cum laude from Wake Forest University. His firm bio notes roughly 18 years of experience leading and advising small businesses — including political organizations and entrepreneurial medical-technology enterprises — before and during his Halifax tenure. Outside of work he serves on the board of deacons at his church, is a distance runner, and describes himself as a "long-suffering Wake Forest sports fan."
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in established, cash-flow-positive lower middle-market companies via control transactions — management buyouts, recapitalizations, corporate divestitures/carve-outs, and go-private deals — not early-stage or seed startups.
- Target size: total enterprise value of ~$50M–$300M, EBITDA of ~$8M–$30M, with equity checks of ~$40M–$80M; add-on acquisitions have no minimum EBITDA.
- Three core sectors: Health & Wellness, Outsourced Business Services, and Franchising.
- Founder-friendly, partnership-oriented posture: Halifax markets itself on "partnering with founders and managers," supplying management teams with tools, processes, human capital, and expertise to drive transformative growth, succession planning, and risk management. The firm has repeatedly appeared on Inc.'s "Founder-Friendly Investors" list.
- Cathcart's personal mandate is origination and relationship-driven sourcing — his stated value-add is bringing proprietary, off-market opportunities into the firm rather than leading a thematic startup thesis.
