Background
Chris Covington is the founder and Managing Director of Covington Associates, a boutique investment bank he established in 1991 and which is headquartered at 99 Summer Street in Boston. Over a career spanning more than 40 years, he has focused on mergers, acquisitions, and capital-raising advisory work for middle-market companies, with particular depth in the healthcare and technology sectors—including diagnostics, disease management, medical devices, and healthcare informatics.
Before founding Covington Associates, Chris was co-founder and managing partner of Volpe & Covington, a San Francisco–based investment bank focused on technology and healthcare. Earlier he was a Managing Partner at Robertson, Coleman & Stephens (a predecessor of Robertson Stephens), another prominent San Francisco technology and healthcare investment banking firm. He began his Wall Street career at Shearson/American Express and its predecessor firms in New York City, where he spent roughly 15 years and rose to Head of Industrial (generalist) Investment Banking.
He is a graduate of Williams College and holds a degree from Harvard Business School. One of the defining relationships of his career was a long-running advisory mandate with Inverness Medical Innovations, for whom Covington Associates advised on close to 30 transactions totaling more than $6 billion in value. Outside of work, he is an avid tennis player and a private pilot who flies for the Angel Flight charitable program, and he lives in the Boston area with his wife and two sons.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Covington Associates provides M&A advisory, capital raising, strategic advisory, fairness opinions, and valuations to middle-market companies—the firm's own positioning emphasizes "senior-level attention" and customized deal strategies rather than a fund with a fixed check size.
- Core verticals are Healthcare, Business Services, Consumer & Industrial, and Technology, with Chris personally strongest in healthcare (diagnostics, disease management, medical devices, healthcare informatics) and technology.
- Chris's activity is that of a sell-side/buy-side dealmaker and capital-raising advisor, not a documented cheque-writing seed investor. The "angel investor / Seed Round" tag in the stub data appears to originate from startup-investor aggregators; no public angel portfolio or stated seed thesis was found in primary sources. Founders should treat the "angel" label with caution and approach him as an advisor/banker.
