Background
Chris Neil is a long-time semiconductor executive turned medtech venture and angel investor. He spent over 30 years at Maxim Integrated Products, where he rose to Senior Vice President running the company's Industrial & Medical Solutions Group — a business generating roughly $1 billion in annual revenue. He holds both a Bachelor of Science (BSEE) and a Master of Science (MSEE) in Electrical Engineering from MIT, graduating in 1990.
At Maxim, Neil co-created and led Maxim Ventures, the company's corporate venture arm, focusing on investments in medical devices and life sciences. Maxim Ventures was designed to invest "beyond the chip" — backing startups that use Maxim's sensor and integrated-circuit technologies to measure and extract value from real-world data across healthcare, energy, and manufacturing. The strategy created a two-way benefit: startups gained faster access to Maxim's chip technology and relationships, while Maxim gained new chip-sales channels and insight into emerging applications. Neil led the effort alongside Shailendra Mahajan until Maxim Integrated was acquired by Analog Devices in 2021.
Following the acquisition, Neil launched a new phase of investing. In May 2023 he co-founded the MedTech Advantage Fund, where he serves as Partner, investing in a broad portfolio of medtech, biotools, and digital-health startups that have graduated from the MedTech Innovator accelerator program. He is also an active member of Life Science Angels, serving as a Board Member and Chair of its Device Screening Committee, and is a frequent speaker at MedTech Strategist Innovation Summits.
Across his investing career, Neil has served as a board member, observer, or advisor to numerous startups, including Spire Health (a respiratory/COPD monitoring company, which he supported through its Series C), Ontera (formerly Two Pore Guys), toSense (acquired by Baxter), Profusa, and Unaliwear.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests "beyond the chip": backs companies that turn measured data from new sensor and chip technologies into actionable insight — bridging data measurement and data analysis.
- Core sectors: medical devices, digital health, biotools, and life sciences, with adjacent interest in industrial measurement (energy, manufacturing).
- Stage: historically led with seed, convertible-note, and Series A checks at Maxim Ventures, and continued to support winners into later rounds (e.g., Spire Health Series B, Profusa Series C).
- Values strategic/technical fit — startups that can leverage a chipmaker's sensor IP, technology, and customer relationships to build products faster.
- Portfolio-level risk philosophy in his own words: "you go into these things knowing that some of your investments are going to pay off and some aren't" — with the winners paying off "in spades."
- Current focus at MedTech Advantage Fund: early- and mid-stage medtech companies that have completed the MedTech Innovator accelerator, providing both capital and hands-on device/commercialization expertise.
