Background

Christian Knott is a Managing Partner at Capnamic, an early-stage venture capital firm with offices in Cologne, Berlin and Munich. Capnamic’s own team page says he joined the firm in 2014 from High-Tech Gründerfonds, started as a Principal, became Partner in 2018, and is now one of Capnamic’s Managing Partners. German corporate registry data lists him as a managing director of Capnamic Ventures Management GmbH since July 1, 2021.

Before Capnamic, Knott worked at High-Tech Gründerfonds as an investment controller, where Capnamic says he was responsible for around 80 portfolio companies. A 2018 Capnamic announcement noted that he had contributed to and overseen investments including Staffbase, LeanIX and Agorize.

Knott studied International Business at Cologne Business School and later completed a part-time MSc program focused on entrepreneurship at HHL Leipzig. CBS reported that he completed his bachelor’s degree with a finance focus, worked at HTGF, and moved to Capnamic in 2014.

At Capnamic, Knott is associated with companies including Agorize, Chronext, cofenster, OneWelcome, LeanIX, Staffbase, unu, everstox, Innoactive, Circula, Tanso, reverse.supply, 35up and Omegga.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Capnamic invests early: pre-seed, seed and Series A. The firm says it backs startups whether they are pre-product, at MVP stage, or already showing first revenues.
  • The firm’s core geographic thesis is DACH-first. Capnamic says it strongly focuses investment activity on Germany and German-speaking regions because of its network in the German tech scene.
  • Capnamic’s stated decision lens includes “team, timing, technology.” Knott has written that there are good reasons to base VC decisions on those three factors.
  • Knott’s own writing emphasizes fund-return math and “VC case” potential: early-stage investments need enough scalability and upside to matter at fund level.
  • He appears especially interested in industrial value-chain software and climate/industrial transformation. In Tanso’s seed announcement, he said Capnamic had “a strong hypothesis” around companies that serve industrial companies and create value-chain transparency.
  • On deal terms, Knott has argued for alignment and perceived fairness in liquidation preferences, favoring structures that preserve investor downside protection without creating founder/investor misalignment.
  • Capnamic presents itself as hands-on but founder-led: it offers network access, mentoring, marketing and finance support, while describing its approach as “sparring not steering.”

Notable Investments

  • LeanIX: Enterprise architecture management software; Capnamic listed it among Knott-associated companies, and SAP completed its acquisition of LeanIX in November 2023.
  • Staffbase: Employee communications platform; Capnamic invested in 2015 at Series A and later described Staffbase as a global leader with 1,000+ customers and 2M+ employees reached.
  • Agorize: Open-innovation and innovation-management platform; listed by Capnamic as a Knott-associated company and cited in Capnamic’s 2018 partner announcement as an investment he helped oversee.
  • Tanso: Carbon accounting and ESG software for industrial manufacturing; Capnamic led Tanso’s €4M seed round in April 2023, and participated in its €12M Series A announced August 5, 2025.
  • Paebbl: Carbon-storing building-materials company; Capnamic led Paebbl’s $25M Series A announced October 9, 2024, with Christian Knott named as the partner who led the investment.
  • cofenster: Enterprise video-production software; Knott co-authored Capnamic’s investment rationale, highlighting automated, scalable video creation for companies.
  • everstox: Logistics-as-a-Service platform for e-commerce and retail logistics; Capnamic co-led a €3M growth financing in October 2020, with Knott quoted on the investment.
  • reverse.supply: Recommerce infrastructure for branded resale; listed as one of Knott’s associated companies and acquired by Trove on April 14, 2025.
